Patent number: 8597021Abstract: An apparatus and method for the creation, placement and control of an area of electrical ionization within an internal combustion engine combustion chamber or a fuel burner is disclosed. A furnace includes a fuel source, a fuel burner, a plasma nozzle and igniter assembly, and the associated housing and flue structures. The plasma nozzle and igniter assembly is arranged so that the fuel sprayed out from the nozzle into the combustion area passes through or in close proximity to the area of plasma ionization. A fuel burner equipped with this electrical ionization device has its fuel efficiency enhanced by the complete and immediate combustion of substantially all of the fuel that passes through the area of plasma ionization. Exhaust gas recirculation using this system is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2012Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Inventor: Michael E. Jayne

Patent number: 6883490Abstract: An apparatus and method for the creation, placement and control of an area of electrical ionization within an internal combustion engine combustion chamber. This area of electrical ionization is positioned so that all of the fuel being injected into the combustion chamber must pass next to or through the area of electrical ionization to ensure that combustion has been initiated for all of the fuel as it is injected. This area of electrical ionization can be kept on as long as it is necessary to insure that the all of the fuel that is injected into the combustion chamber can be completely combusted. An engine equipped with this electrical ionization device has its fuel economy enhanced by timely, controlled, and complete combustion of all of the fuel injected into its combustion chamber. Furthermore, the pollutant emissions of both oxides of nitrogen and unburned hydrocarbons are reduced dramatically.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2002Date of Patent: April 26, 2005Inventor: Michael E. Patent number: 4791898Abstract: A V-engine is provided with a scotch yoke and connecting rods attaching plural pistons to the yoke such that the power stroke of both pistons is substantially simultaneous and the return strokes are substantially silmultaneous. Piston dwell is introduced by virtue of the lateral and angular displacement of the pistons in their respective angularly disposed cylinders and, in addition, dwell is introduced by virtue of the scotch yoke configuration wherein the slot retaining a sliding block connecting the yoke to the throw of a crankshaft may be of various configurations, rectilinear, curvilinear and offset arcuate in configuration.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1986Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: R P & M Engines, Inc.Inventor: Michael E. Patent number: 4598672Abstract: An internal combustion engine has means for stabilizing the position of a yoke and piston during the reciprocating movement. A pressure source transmits a force to one side of yoke to maintain the yoke in constant contact with a bearing surface on the wall of the crankcase, at the same time, the pressure source causes lubrication to be continually transmitted to a sliding block within the yoke at all positions of the crankshaft to lubricate the bearing between the crank throw and sliding block and the bearings between the sliding block and yoke to minimize wear during extended use. The yoke and piston are further stabilized in their reciprocating motion by a peg and ring configuration, one of which is mounted to the crankcase and the other mounted to the yoke. Twist of the yoke and piston about the cylinder axis is prevented by channels in the crankcase wall within which the yoke edges slide.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1985Date of Patent: July 8, 1986Assignee: R P & M EnginesInventors: Michael E. Jayne, Robert B. Gray

Patent number: 4584972Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a cylinder with a first axis, a piston housing therein and connected to a yoke housing having a sliding block within a slot in the yoke which slot is curved about a center of curvature with the concave side of the slot facing away from the combustion chamber and offset from the vertical axis of the combustion chamber, the curve's radius being such as to provide a power stroke having a time period which exceeds the time period of a compression stroke.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1984Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Inventors: Michael E. Jayne, Peter D. Anderson, James T. Hoffman, Robert B. Gray
