  • Publication number: 20100139277
Abstract: The invention relates to systems and methods for rapidly and isothermally expanding and compressing gas in energy storage and recovery systems that use open-air hydraulic-pneumatic cylinder assemblies, such as an accumulator and an intensifier in communication with a high-pressure gas storage reservoir on a gas-side of the circuits and a combination fluid motor/pump, coupled to a combination electric generator/motor on the fluid side of the circuits. The systems use heat transfer subsystems in communication with at least one of the cylinder assemblies or reservoir to thermally condition the gas being expanded or compressed.

  • Publication number: 20090165489
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein include a condenser stack having a cross-flow plate with a plurality of transverse slots, and first and second microchannel plates mounted to the cross-flow plate. In some embodiments, the microchannel plates may have a plurality of microchannels that allow for the flow of the refrigerant substantially through the plurality of microchannels in a direction generally perpendicular to the plurality of transverse slots. In some embodiments, the condenser stack may be implemented in an apparatus, such as a heat sink assembly, and in a refrigerator system. Moreover, embodiments for a method for manufacturing the condenser stack and apparatus are described. Other embodiments are also described.

  • Publication number: 20070107782
Abstract: An electromechanically-assisted control system for use in a second-stage regulator. Regulator control assembly (20?), also referred to as all-electronic (AE) assembly (20?), includes an electromechanical actuator (EMA) sub-assembly (22) for controlling airflow through single air supply line (23). EMA sub-assembly (22) includes electronically controllable actuator (ECA) (34), which removably seals EMA orifice (36) in wall (30) of pilot chamber (32). ECA (34) is electrically connected with and controlled by control electronics (38). The control electronics include programmable microprocessor (40), which is electrically connected with charge and discharge electronics (42), both of which are electrically connected with power supply (44). All-electronic (AE) assembly (20?) has only an EMA sub-assembly and no mechanical actuator sub-assembly.

  • Publication number: 20070015035
Abstract: A lightweight direct methanol fuel cell unit (20) comprising a fuel cell stack (24) enclosed within a housing (22). In one embodiment the fuel cell stack includes a plurality of polymer electrolyte membrane electrode assemblies (52) stacked alternatingly with a plurality of bipolar plates (48). Each bipolar plate includes a cathode flow field (78) defined by a porous cathode flow field structure (56) and an anode flow field (62) defined by an upper plate (58) and a lower plate (60) separated from one another by a plurality of spacers (64). The anode flow fields are manifolded with one another via manifold embossments (118, 120) that are hermetically sealed with one another with a gasket (126). The fuel cell stack and housing are shaped so as to form four manifold regions (36) in the spaces between the fuel cell stack and housing.

  • Publication number: 20060261705
Abstract: A radial piezoelectric motor comprises a housing, a motor shaft rotatably mounted in the housing and a plurality of piezoelectric actuators inside the housing radially disposed about the axis of the motor shaft. The motor also includes circuitry for applying a voltage to the piezoelectric actuators to expand the actuators repeatedly and in succession and apparatus responsive to the repeated and successive expanding of the actuators for rotating the motor shaft.
