Patent number: 6879918Abstract: The invention is directed to techniques and mechanisms for measuring transmission loss of a cable comprising the steps of disabling an antenna connected to a second end of the cable, feeding an input signal having an energy level into a first end of the cable for transmission of the input energy toward the second end of the cable, measuring a reflected energy, reflected back toward the first end of the cable from the second end of the cable, and comparing the reflected energy to a input energy to determine a cable loss. Directional couplers may be used to sample the input and reflected energy to be measured. The information derived from the comparison of input and reflected energy measurements can then be used to calibrate a transmitter thereby optimizing performance.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Bassel H. Daoud, Christopher E. Gayle, Ivan Pawlenko, Dieter N. Scherer, Richard F. Schwartz, Michael J. Wheeler

Patent number: 6610411Abstract: A protective tape used to protect an electrical connection from the effects of ultraviolet radiation. The protective tape comprises a silicone gel that contains a UV inhibitor such as zinc oxide. The protective tape is used to wrap a connection, such as a coaxial connection, in order to provide a long lasting, secure environment for the connection and to shield against the effects of UV radiation that can otherwise cause a deterioration of tape. As one embodiment, the silicone gel is a two layer gel with each layer having a different hardness. The tape is formed by casting the silicone gel on a suitable backing and that backing is removed from the tape at the time the tape is used to wrap around the electrical connection.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Bassel H. Daoud, Christopher R. Gayle, Ivan Pawlenko, Michael J. Wheeler

Patent number: 6412642Abstract: Application of surface marking to metal stock, such as aluminum sheet, prior to or during scrap-generating manufacturing operations, to provide a detectable mark on pieces of manufacturing scrap derived from the marked sheet and commingled with scrap of other aluminum alloy sheet, so that the scrap can be sorted and the marked alloy scrap pieces separated from scrap of other alloy sheet to which the marking was not applied. Different markings, providing detectably different marks, may be respectively applied to sheet of different compositions if scrap pieces of more than two different compositions or compositional families are to be sorted and separated from each other.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2001Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Alcan International LimitedInventors: David F. Charles, Greg J. Courval, Michael P. Thomas, Michael J. Wheeler, Ian Wilson

Patent number: 5728241Abstract: A process of producing solution heat treated aluminum alloy sheet material comprises subjecting hot- or cold-rolled aluminum alloy sheet to solution heat treatment followed by quenching and, before substantial age hardening has taken place, subjecting the alloy sheet material to one or more subsequent heat treatments involving heating the material to a peak temperature in the range of 100.degree. to 300.degree. C. (preferably 130.degree.-270.degree. C.), holding the material at the peak temperature for a period of time less than about 1 minute, and cooling the alloy from the peak temperature to a temperature of 85.degree. C. or less. The sheet material treated in this way can by used for automotive panels and has good a good "paint bake response", i.e. an increase in yield strength from the T4 temper to the T8X temper upon painting and baking of the panels.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1996Date of Patent: March 17, 1998Assignee: Alcan International LimitedInventors: Alok Kumar Gupta, Michael J. Wheeler, Michael J. Bull, Pierre H. Marois
