  • Publication number: 20110189994
Abstract: Provided are methods and systems of managing handoffs in a wireless communication system having different types of vocoders. Some embodiments include translating state memory of a first vocoder to a second vocoder using a state memory transcoder. The state memory may be delayed to align differences in algorithmic delays between the first vocoder and the second vocoder. In one embodiment, a speech signal may be decoded from the first vocoder, delayed, and encoded to the second vocoder. Furthermore, for a period of time during and/or adjacent to the handoff, the first vocoder may output with decreasing amplitude while the second vocoder outputs with increasing amplitude. Such techniques may be used alone or in combination.

  • Publication number: 20110171960
Abstract: Provided are methods and systems of managing vertical handoffs in a wireless communication network. Embodiments include analyzing wireless device usage to determine usage patterns, which may include locations and times at which the wireless device is typically accessing the network. The network may recognize points in the usage patterns at which signal quality parameters are typically reduced. Such reductions in signal quality parameters may lead to inefficient vertical handoffs. The network may decrease adverse effects of inefficient vertical handoffs by reducing ping ponging, selecting links between wireless devices and network nodes, or indicating to a user of the wireless device that delays and/or data loss may occur.

  • Publication number: 20110066374
Abstract: Various embodiments of a device, system and methods that promote safety and security within an organization. Sensor data from one or more installation sensors is collected, analyzed and used to create a map and/or directions that, when received by a wireless mobile device, facilitate a person's possible egress around or from a detected event. The information provided to the person by the map and/or the directions may be individually crafted to be of maximum use to the specific recipient so the person can understand, plan and execute the most appropriate danger avoidance maneuvers in minimal time.

  • Patent number: 7903631
Abstract: A system and/or method for relaying messages in a network (e.g. a mobile network) are provided. Certain portable communications nodes are instrumented with omni-directional antennas. Certain static communications nodes are network cluster-head nodes with directional antennas, and, for example, achieve much of the gain possible when all nodes have directional antennas. Cluster-head communications preferably are used when the nodes are separable by the directional antennas. Preferably, there is a transition to mesh communications when the nodes cannot take advantage of the directional antennas. One feature of certain exemplary embodiments is that only one side of a communication link requires a directional antennal to enable spatial frequency reuse.

  • Publication number: 20090303908
Abstract: A system for setting WLAN node operating parameters includes at least one access point (AP) radio and a plurality of nodes in wireless communication with the AP radio according to media access control (MAC) parameters. Each of the plurality of nodes has a quality of service (QoS) threshold for wireless communication with the AP radio that is a function of the MAC parameters and includes a controller configured to provide individualized control of the MAC parameters. The controller is programmed to measure current settings for at least a portion of the MAC parameters for the node, input the current settings for those MAC parameters of the node into a WLAN system model to generate a system model output, and adapt a setting of at least one of the MAC parameters for the node to meet the QoS threshold for the node based on the system model output.

  • Publication number: 20090186577
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining network association status includes a first electronic device having a wireless communication system and a proximity system, and a second electronic device having a wireless communication system and a proximity system. The wireless communication systems of the first and second electronic devices have a communication range therebetween greater than an interaction range between the proximity systems of the first and second electronic devices. The proximity system of one of the first and second electronic devices is configured to interact with the proximity system of the other of the first and second electronic devices to determine proximity between the first and second electronic devices. The communication system of the first electronic device is configured to establish an association status communication with the communication system of the second electronic device after the proximity of the first and second electronic devices has been determined.

  • Publication number: 20090170483
Abstract: A technique is provided for providing information to a customer within a store. A mobile phone is provided that is adapted to communicate with Near Field Communication (NFC) devices and wireless Internet Protocol (IP) based network, or Internet system, as well as operate as a cellular phone. The mobile phone is configured to bridge information between the various protocols used to enable the mobile phone to communicate with an NFC device, a wireless Internet system, and a cellular phone system. For example, information obtained by the mobile phone from a NFC device may be transferred to the portion of the mobile phone that is used to connect the mobile phone to a wireless Internet system to enable the mobile phone to provide the proper authentication to access the wireless Internet system. • Patent number: 7548512
Abstract: A method of prioritizing messages on a Local Area Network comprises receiving a digitized incoming message, comparing a message signature of the incoming message with a stored priority message signature, passing non-priority messages to a standard Ethernet protocol stack for processing, storing priority messages temporarily, preventing priority messages from being processed in the standard Ethernet protocol stack, and handling priority messages using a simplified protocol stack designed to process a specific data packet type. This method may be performed by an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) inserted between an Ethernet PHY layer and Ethernet MAC layer on a Network Interface Card of a host device. In particular, automated machinery control systems using the Ethernet protocol for networking are intended to benefit from the prioritizing method and implementation.
