Patent number: 6895724Abstract: Laminated hip and ridge asphalt shingle having a first, a second and a third layer laminated together by a lamination adhesive. The first layer is of two L-shaped configurations, each having a horizontal head portion and a vertical butt portion. The horizontal head portions are superimposed on each other, while the vertical butt portions are placed adjacent to each other and form a gap which allows bending of the first layer thereby preventing stress and breaking. The second layer overlaps the firs layer. The third layer only overlaps the head portion of the second layer. The top surface of the shingle is coated with mineral granules, while portions of the undersurface of the shingle are coated with a self-seal adhesive to secure the shingle to the hip or ridge of a roof.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2004Date of Patent: May 24, 2005Assignee: Building Materials Investment CorporationInventor: Michael P. Naipawer, III

Publication number: 20040076786Abstract: A self-adhering, multi-layer composite membrane for sealing a substrate and providing waterproof integrity to the substrate. The composite membrane includes: a surface layer of metal or of a polymeric material to interface the environment; a polyolefin film having a top surface and a bottom surface bonded to the surface layer by an adhesive at its top surface; a waterproof, asphalt-based layer adhered to the polyolefin film; a reinforcing mat having a top surface and a bottom surface, the top surface of which is adhered to the waterproof, asphalt-based layer; a second waterproof, asphalt-based layer adhered to the bottom surface of the reinforcing mat which is adapted to sealingly adhere to the substrate; and a polyolefin release film on the bottom surface of the waterproof asphalt-based adhesive layer to prevent adhesion between the asphalt-based adhesive layer and the surface layer when the composite is wound into a spiral roll.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Applicant: BUILDING MATERIALS INVESTMENT CORPORATIONInventors: Michael P. Naipawer, Adem Chich, Murray S. Sherman
