  • Patent number: 6175197
Abstract: An electric lamp assembly includes an electrodeless lamp, including an electrodeless lamp envelope, a transformer core disposed in proximity to the lamp envelope and an input winding disposed on the transformer core. The lamp envelope preferably comprises a closed-loop, tubular lamp envelope, and the transformer is preferably disposed around the lamp envelope. The electrodeless lamp envelope encloses a fill material for supporting a low pressure discharge. The electrodeless lamp further includes an amalgam located within the lamp envelope. The input winding receives radio frequency energy which produces a low pressure discharge in the lamp envelope. The electrodeless lamp includes a thermal bridge between the transformer core and the amalgam, so that the amalgam is heated by the transformer core during operation.

  • Patent number: 5092804
Abstract: A method to press mold heavy wall metal halide lamps (with reduced glass mass in end seals) is disclosed. Wall temperature in a metal halide lamp may be normalized by varying the wall thickness in relation to the heat falling on the interior surface, and the heat lost through the exterior surface. Increasing the wall thickness, acts to spread the heat, and decrease the wall temperature. Thinning the wall, acts to concentrate the heat, and increase the wall temperature. By press molding the lamp glass and simultaneously reducing the glass mass in the end seals, the desired wall thickness may be obtained without excessive heat loss in the end seals to result in an isothermal internal profile.

  • Patent number: 5064395
Abstract: A compact arc discharge lamp may be formed with an inner lamp capsule and an outer envelope. One or more of the leads to the inner capsule may be sheathed to insulate the lead from improper arc over. The sheath may passed through the seal of the outer envelope, so the gas state of the intermediate volume may be adjust before final sealing.

  • Patent number: 5001391
Abstract: A glow discharge starter having an hermetically sealed envelope of vitreous material, a seal located at one end thereof and containing an ionizable medium. A pair of electrical conductors extend through the seal and terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair of electrodes within the envelope. At least one of the electrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. The bimetallic element is deformable by heat into engagement with the other of the electrodes. Gettering means contained within the envelope reduces dark effect by improving dark starting and reduces aging time of the glow discharge starter. Preferably, the gettering means is a metal selected from the group consisting of bismuth and lead.

A pair of electrical conductors extend through the seal and terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair of electrodes within the envelope. At least one of the electrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. A coating comprising lanthanum, nickel and boron is disposed on a surface within the envelope. Preferably, the coating comprises from about 2 percent to about 4 percent boron. The coating is effective in improving the aging efficiency and the temperature stability of the glow discharge starter.

A pair of electrical conductors extend through the seal and terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair of electrodes within the envelope. At least one of the electrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. A coating comprising lanthanum, nickel and at least one radioactive dopant is disposed on a surface within the envelope. The coating is sufficient to reduce the dark effect by improving the dark starting of the glow discharge starter.

  • Patent number: 4646049
Abstract: A glow discharge starter having an hermetically sealed envelope containing an ionizable medium, a bimetallic electrode and a counter electrode located therewithin. A pair of lead-in conductors passes through one end of the envelope for electrically connecting the electrodes. A spot of dried paste is disposed on a surface within the envelope and comprises a mixture of thorium and a binder. The quantity of thorium is sufficient to reduce the dark effect of the glow discharge starter by improving the dark starting performance of the glow discharge starter.
