  • Patent number: 8537830
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for automatically registering various system attributes with a VoIP device such as an VoIP phone. The system attributes are provided by a network, preferably an adjacent switching device made aware of the system attributes through one of a number of learning mechanisms. The system attributes may include one or more of the following: the VLAN identification used for VoIP communications in the subnet in which the VoIP phone is connected; the switching device identification, switching device slot, and switching device port number to which the VoIP phone is connected. The switch, slot, and port are used in some embodiments by an IP PBX system to construct a relational database that associates the geographic location of the connection with the IP phone for purposes of reporting the physical location of the VoIP user to emergency response personnel.

  • Patent number: 8086721
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for managing network devices is disclosed. The method preferably includes the steps of monitoring for a change to the value of one or more local resource properties associated with the managed network device; generating a learning event report comprising the value of at least one of the one or more local resource properties; and transmitting the learning event report to a central data store. At the central data store, the value of the one or more local resource properties are recorded and made available to the network management system for asynchronous processing. The central data store is preferably a directory server.

  • Publication number: 20050278541
Abstract: A user authentication service for a communication network authenticates local users before granting them access to personalized sets of network resources. Authentication agents on intelligent edge devices present users of associated end systems with log-in challenges. Information supplied by the users is forwarded to an authentication server for verification. If successfully verified, the authentication server returns to the agents authorized connectivity information and time restrictions for the particular authenticated users. The agents use the information to establish rules for filtering and forwarding network traffic originating from or destined for particular authenticated users during authorized time periods. An enhanced authentication server may be engaged if additional security is desired. The authorized connectivity information preferably includes identifiers of one or more virtual local area networks active in the network.

  • Publication number: 20040003094
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mirroring traffic from a first network device to a second network device are disclosed. The method includes the selecting of one or more qualified packets from an ingress stream using mirror classification criteria; duplicating the one or more qualified packets; appending a mirrored flow encapsulation header with the destination addressing information of the second network device to the duplicate packets; transmitting the duplicate packets from the first network device to the second network device; and removing the mirrored flow encapsulation header at the target network device to regenerate the qualified packets originally received at the first network device. The qualified packets may then be forwarded to an egress port of the second network device and analyzed by a traffic analysis tool, for example. With the invention, the traffic received at the first network device may be analyzed remotely.

  • Patent number: 5452535
Abstract: A shot cup retardation device including circumferentially spaced and radially protruding ridges, pins, studs, or set screws; or an applied grit around an inner circumference of a barrel; or a plurality of continuous circumferential ribs arranged axially spaced apart within the barrel, all for retarding the velocity of a shot cup so as to inhibit interference between shot and cup downstream of the shotgun muzzle. Additionally, the invention provides that a shot cup retardation device and a downstream choke or pattern conditioner can be utilized in combination to produce a fine tuned and selective pattern without the random influence of shot cup and shot interference.
