  • Publication number: 20030158514
Abstract: A single access dialysis needle system comprises a first cannula, a second cannula or sheath, and a barrier arranged on the outer surface of the first cannula. The distal end of the first cannula extends distal to the distal end of the second cannula or outer sheath, and the barrier is positioned between the respective distal ends. When the barrier is inflated or otherwise activated, it prevents or minimizes recirculation.

  • Publication number: 20030153874
Abstract: A vascular access system comprises a needle having a distal tip and a proximal fitting section and a dilator having a solid distal section connected to a solid proximal section and an annular recess therebetween, the dilator having a passageway so that the dilator is coaxially positioned around the needle. The needle has at least one opening positioned proximal to its distal tip so that, when the distal end of the needle enters a blood vessel, blood enters the annular recess to show the operator that access has been achieved. Optionally, a sheath having a distal tip, a proximal fitting section, and a lumen sufficient to coaxially fit over the dilator.

  • Publication number: 20030088212
Abstract: An access system for providing subcutaneous access to a vessel, organ, or body cavity comprises a needle and a rigid or semi-rigid tunneler arranged coaxially around the needle, such that the needle moves slidably within the tunneler. Optionally a sheath may be positioned coaxial to the tunneler. The tunneler-needle system is inserted through an incision in a patient's skin to initiate a procedure whereby a catheter is inserted into the vessel, organ, or body cavity.

  • Patent number: 6482615
Abstract: A method and apparatus for effecting rapid thermal cycling of samples, by producing a high-velocity air flow through a closed loop flow path, and energizing an electrical heater within the closed loop flow path to heat the air flowing therethrough to a desired temperature. A sample holder is introduced into the closed loop flow path for exposing the sample holder to the high-velocity heated air flowing therethrough for rapidly heating the sample. The sample is rapidly cooled to a desired temperature by de-energizing the electrical heater, and opening an air outlet from the closed loop flow path, while continuing to produce the high-velocity air flow therethrough.

  • Patent number: 6200781
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the temperature of at least one liquid reaction mixture, the apparatus including (a) at least one reaction vessel having open proximal and distal ends, the at least one reaction vessel including a gas permeable, liquid retaining, barrier positioned at a proximal portion thereof; (b) a pump being in fluid communication with the proximal end of the at least one reaction vessel through the barrier, for generating negative or positive pressure within the at least one reaction vessel, for translocating the at least one liquid reaction mixture through the distal end into and out of the at least one reaction vessel; and (c) a temperature controller being in thermal communication with the at least one reaction vessel for controlling the temperature of the at least one liquid reaction mixture when maintained within the at least one reaction vessel.

  • Patent number: 6034227
Abstract: An isolated DNA sequence encoding a mammalian mast cell function-associated antigen (MAFA) is provided. A soluble derivative of the MAFA is obtained by culturing a host cell transformed by a recombinant expression vector comprising a sequence of said DNA encoding a form of soluble MAFA, and may be used for screening potential ligands of the MAFA. The ligands, alone or in combination with the MAFA, may be used in pharmaceutical compositions for the prevention of inflammatory and allergic reactions.
