    Abstract: The two parts of a splined coupling are held together axially by a resilient split locking ring. The locking ring is seated in grooves of the two parts, which are formed in the splines of the parts. The ring is formed from a stainless steel having a nitrided hardened surface layer to resist galling or damage to the ring as a result of the spline notched sides of the grooves.
