The installable components include authoring/reading components and a mailbox browser/editor component. The main email component provides an underlying graphical user interface (GUI) for functions directly associated with the storage and transfer of electronic mail messages and also handles all data bundling and unbundling that may be required to transform a message created by an authoring component into a fully MIME compliant message. In addition, the main email component includes “hooks” (an application programming interface or API) for the attachment of the installable components. The authoring/reading components each provide functionality particular to the type of document the component is designed to create/display.

    Abstract: Electronic mail client software has a mailbox displayer which lists messages together with an icon for each message where the icon is associated with the MIME type of the message. Mail which contains a file attachment is listed in the inbox with an icon indicative of the type of file attached to the email. The mailbox displayer interprets the MIME type and selects the appropriate icon either from the icon registry in the OS or from a directory of icons maintained by the email client software. The mailbox displayer component preferably includes all of the functionality of state-of-the-art mailbox displayers and includes the functionality of looking to a directory of icons for display with information about the message based on the MIME type and subtype of the message. If there is no appropriate icon in the directory of icons, the mailbox displayer uses icon image data contained in a subpart of the MIME message if it is available. Otherwise, no icon or a generic icon is used.

Input signals are mapped according to keycode identical command sets, context arguments and selection arguments. Commands that can be invoked by the user include operating system commands, pictorial object commands, and interface utility commands. Using the pictorial object commands, the user can configure the interface so that different pictures and icons are associated with different directories and files.

A practical exemplary embodiment provides a trouble ticket fault management system for a communications network. The exemplary embodiment is particularly appropriate for utilizing the automatic learning capabilities of the invention. In the exemplary embodiment, a communications network is represented as a Bayesian network where devices and communication links are represented as nodes in the Bayesian network.

Statistical profiles are established for each of these other variables. The environment is continuously monitored and the normal profile, as well as the thresholds/ranges, are preferably continuously updated during normal conditions, as indicated by the trusted variable(s).
