  • Patent number: 4909766
Abstract: A hydraulic tilt and trim arrangement for an outboard drive that includes a trim fluid motor and a tilt fluid motor operated by a common fluid pump. A selector valve is provided in the circuit connecting the pump with the fluid motors for disabling the communicaion to the trim fluid motor to achieve rapid tilting up. When the selector valve is in this position, a relief valve is provided that permits relief of the fluid pressure in the trim fluid motor when loads are applied to the trim fluid motor.

  • Patent number: 4778414
Abstract: Several embodiments of semi-automatic trim controls for marine outboard drives wherein the operator may achieve trim up or trim down operation at his choice. In accordance with the various embodiments, an arrangement is provided for discontinuing operation of the power means once a preset position is reached. Trim up may be selected automatically upon reaching of a predetermined speed. In one embodiment, speed is sensed by measuring engine speed and in another embodiment, throttle position is sensed.

  • Patent number: 4720278
Abstract: A number of embodiments of trimming devices for marine propulsion units wherein there is provided an arrangement for improving the contact area between the thrust member and the outboard drive member and wherein sliding movement is minimized through pivotal support of one of the bearing elements. In some embodiments, the bearing elements have cooperating complementary curved surfaces and, in other embodiments, one surface is curved and the other is not. An improved arrangement is also disclosed for facilitating replacement of worn elements.

  • Patent number: 4637802
Abstract: A twin outboard drive and more particularly to an improved transmission and shifting arrangement for such drives. The drives include forward, neutral and reverse transmissions of the bevel gear type and which provide counter-rotation of the respective associated propellers. One of the transmissions is shifted in one direction to shift from neutral to forward while the other transmission is shifted in the opposite direction to shift from neutral to forward. A pair of remote control shift levers are provided and a motion transmitting means connects the shift levers with the transmissions so that the transmissions are shifted in opposite directions when the shift levers are moved in the same direction. In some embodiments, this is accomplished by a crank and follower mechanism and in other embodiments, it is accomplished by a cam and follower arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4604069
Abstract: An exhaust and exhaust cooling system for an outboard motor including an improved slow speed exhaust gas discharge including a plurality of expansion chambers and a water chamber through which exhaust gases must pass before discharge to an above the water slow speed exhaust gas discharge opening. A number of cooling jackets encircle portions of the exhaust system and coolant from the engine is delivered from these jackets both into the high speed and slow speed exhaust gas discharges.

  • Patent number: 4419083
Abstract: A tilting supporting arrangement for an outboard drive unit that permits it to be pivoted from a normal running position to a tilted up position. A tilt stop mechanism is provided for holding the unit in its tilted up position and a tilt locking mechanism is provided for holding the unit in its tilted down position. Each of the tilt stop and tilt locking mechanisms is movable between and operative position for retaining the drive unit in the respective position and released positions. The tilt locking mechanism and tilt stop mechanism are oriented in such a way that when the tilt stop mechanism is moved to its operative position and the drive unit is tilted up, the tilt locking mechanism will automatically be operated to its operative position.

  • Patent number: 4148291
Abstract: A recoil-type starter for an internal combustion engine. The starter includes a drum with a starting wire wound around it. The drum is disposed to confront a driven member such as a fly-wheel which is in turn operably connected to the engine. A starting pawl is pivotally secured to a peripheral portion of the drum, and is adapted to be pivotally moved to project radially outwardly of the drum into engagement with a cooperative projection formed on the driven member as the drum is rotated by pulling the starting wire, thereby to impart a starting inertia to the engine through the driven member. A stop is unitarily formed on the drum for limiting the outward pivotal movement of the starting pawl. The stop is positioned to abut a portion of the starting pawl close to the outer end of the latter at which the cooperating projection of the driven member contacts from the radially outer side of the drum.
