  • Patent number: 8041315
Abstract: A method and a device for tuning power amplifier (PA, 203) properties such as back-off. A peak-to-average value (PAR) of the amplifier input signal is first obtained by control means (206) and then used for adjusting the power amplifier (203) with tuning means (204, 208, 210) functionally connected to the amplifier (203). The suggested solution is advantageously exploited in a wireless communications device like a mobile terminal to optimize the performance thereof by, for example, reducing the power dissipation in the transmitter.

  • Patent number: 7453927
Abstract: An RF transceiver includes an Envelope Restoration (ER) transmitter (TX) and a receiver (RX). A method includes providing the TX with a programmable delay element in at least one of an AM path and a PM path; making an RF connection between an output of the TX and an input of the RX; and when receiving a signal through the RF connection, determining a delay value for use in programming the programmable delay element. The method includes measuring an effect on a parameter of a delay mismatch between the AM path and the PM path for use in determining the delay value. Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR); Own-Channel Power (OCP) or Bit Error Ratio (BER) may be measured in this regard. When measuring ACLR, delay is adjusted to minimize ACLR; when measuring OCP, delay is adjusted to maximize OCP; and when measuring BER, delay is adjusted to minimize BER.

  • Patent number: 7299021
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for operating a RF receiver. The method executes, during operation of the RF receiver, by periodically determining existing RF receiver operational conditions; determining RF receiver performance requirements based at least in part on the determined existing RF receiver operational conditions; and by allocating power consumption between RF receiver functional blocks in accordance with the determined RF receiver performance requirements and in accordance with a behavior model of at least one of the RF receiver as a whole and individual functional blocks of the RF receiver. The method may also monitor the resulting RF receiver signal quality to determine if allocation of power consumption has resulted in an optimum allocation of the power consumption.

  • Patent number: 6974724
Abstract: A laminated structure that can be used as an add-on card removably disposed on an electronic device, such as a mobile phone. The laminated structure has a number of layers laminated together for embedding one or more RF-chips. Advantageously, one or more layers are made of FR4 boards, each of which has a dielectric core layer between two electrically conductive foils. One of the layers has one or more openings for securing the embedded RF-chips with a bonding material such as epoxy. The electrically conductive foils on the inner layers can be etched or otherwise removed to form electrical circuits. Micro-vias can be provided through the various layers for interconnecting the electrical circuits and the RF-chips. The electrically conductive foils on the outer layers of the laminated structure can be used to provide electromagnetic shielding to the RF-chips.

  • Patent number: 6954624
Abstract: A transmitter into which a modulated signal (TX) is fed, the transmitter comprising an adjustable amplifier (1) for adjusting transmission power level, the modulated signal (TX) being fed into to the input of the amplifier (1), an amplification branch (11) arranged after the adjustable amplifier (1) on the signal path, the amplification branch comprising a power amplifier (3) for further amplifying the transmission power level, and at least one filter (27, 28) arranged after the power amplifier (3) on the signal path for filtering the frequency band to be transmitted. The transmitter further comprises an antenna (9) after the amplification branch (11) on the signal path for transmitting signals. The transmitted is characterized by a bypass branch (10) which operatively couples the output of the adjustable amplifier (1) and the antenna (9) and is used for bypassing the amplification branch (11) and connecting signals to be transmitted at low transmission power levels directly to the antenna (9).
