  • Patent number: 9696791
Abstract: This invention describes a method for expanding universal plug and play capabilities in a power constrained environment thus facilitating communication between two terminals with universal plug and play (UPnP) application capabilities, wherein one of the terminals is in a sleeping mode. The present invention can be applied (but not be limited) to mobile terminals, wireless devices, portable devices, mobile communication devices, mobile phones, etc. The invention describes a mechanism in which the UPnP application dynamically instructs the TCP/IP stack to tune-up its parameters so that it can tolerate longer delays and timeouts, due to the fact that it operates in a power constrained UPnP environment.

  • Patent number: 7764981
Abstract: A mobile terminal includes a processor capable of operating a link manager. The link manager is capable of at least partially operating a wireless connection between the terminal and an access point in an active mode, where the access point is coupled to a network. The link manager is also capable of transitioning the connection from the active mode to a standby mode or hibernate mode. In this regard, transitioning the connection includes entering the mobile terminal in a power-saving mode of a bearer of the connection, such as a Bluetooth power-saving mode, and directing the access point to reduce traffic flowing from the network across the connection to the mobile terminal when the mobile terminal is otherwise capable of receiving the traffic.

  • Patent number: 7664081
Abstract: A portable gateway apparatus communicates with devices coupled to a first network and devices coupled to at least a second network. The gateway provides an interface to a mobile phone to discover services/devices within both the first and the at least second networks and interacts with them. The mobile phone includes a service/content directory enabling a user to select preferred services. The gateway conducts service discovery to identify services and devices responsive to the user request. The services and description are provided to the user for selection, after which a service-specific interface is displayed to enable the mobile phone to control the execution of the discovered services.

  • Publication number: 20090287794
Abstract: Assisting media servers to determine profiles of locally served media objects involves enumerating digital media objects on a media server device. A remote procedure call of a network server is invoked to determine the media profile identifiers. Sample portions of the digital media objects are accessed, and the sample portions are usable to assign media profile identifiers to the respective digital media objects. The sample portions of the digital media objects are sent to the network server. In response to invoking the remote procedure call, the media server device receives the media profile identifiers assigned to the sample portions from the network server. The media profile identifiers are assigned to the digital media objects at the media server device based on the assignment of the media profile identifiers to the sample portions.

  • Publication number: 20090161579
Abstract: Interaction with network capable input device involves advertising, from a mobile device coupled to an Internet Protocol (IP) network, a user input service via an ad-hoc peer-to-peer protocol of the IP network. The user input service is established with a controlled device via the ad-hoc, peer-to-peer protocol. User input events are detected at the mobile device, and the user input events are provided to the controlled device in accordance with parameters of the established user input service.

  • Publication number: 20080222701
Abstract: A new and unique method or apparatus for providing protected transport of digital content from a first device to a second device, featuring activating a proximity link between the first and second devices; performing proximity detection between the first device and the second device; delivering the digital content from the first device to second device over a communications link when it is determined that the proximity between devices is within a predetermined range. The proximity link may take the form of a wireless link that is limited in its range with adequate authentication mechanisms, and may be either is an additional link compared to, for example, a wireless broadband link, or may even form part of the wireless broadband link if its broadband is sufficient. In operation, an actual streaming transfer or other suitable data transfer would be provided from one device to the other device using the additional link, such as the wireless broadband link.

  • Publication number: 20060200570
Abstract: Network file systems are mounted to a client arrangement via a local, ad hoc, peer-to-peer network. The client arrangement is coupled to the network, and one or more network file protocols that are compatible with the client arrangement are determined. Using XML-based discovery protocols of the network, descriptors of the one or more network file protocols are sent to a file server coupled to the network. A descriptor of at least one network file protocol compatible with the file server are received from the file server. The compatible file protocol is selected from the one or more network protocols. A network file system provided by the file server is mounted to the client arrangement using the compatible network file protocol.

  • Publication number: 20060095546
Abstract: A system and method for maintaining the configuration of a server within a network. After daemons are initiated, it is determined whether network interfaces are available. If network interfaces are available the available network interfaces are automatically configured. It is then determined whether infrastructure exists. If no infrastructure is detected, then an enhanced socket operation is initiated until a router advertisement is received. Once a router advertisement is received, available network interfaces are configured as necessary.
