Publication number: 20230211343Abstract: A single junction sorter for a microfluidic particle sorter, the single-junction sorter comprising: an input channel, configured to receive a fluid containing particles; an output sort channel and an output waste channel, each connected to the input channel for receiving the fluid therefrom; a bubble generator, operable to selectively displace the fluid around a particle to be sorted and thereby to create a transient flow of the fluid in the input channel; and a vortex element, configured to cause a vortex in the transient flow in order to direct the particle to be sorted into the output sort channel.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2023Publication date: July 6, 2023Inventors: Mikhail BASHTANOV, Richard GOLD, Calum HAYES, Fred HUSSAIN, Robyn PRITCHARD, Salman Samson ROGERS, Nuno VARELAS, Alexander ZHUKOV

Publication number: 20230143960Abstract: A cartridge can comprise a first elastomeric membrane and a second elastomeric membrane, and portions of the elastomeric membranes which are sealed to each other can circumscribe unsealed portions of the membranes. In a resting state, the unsealed portion of the first elastomeric membrane abuts or is proximate to the unsealed portion of the second elastomeric membrane. One or more reagents can be injected between the unsealed portions of the first and second elastomeric membranes to push the unsealed portions apart from each other in this region of the membranes. The unsealed portions can be sequentially pushed apart in downstream regions to form a channel between the elastomeric membranes. Positively displaced fluid pushes the unsealed membrane portions apart to a volume that conforms to the volume of the fluid to minimize or prevent dead volume in the channel and thus minimize or prevent air bubbles in the fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2022Publication date: May 11, 2023Inventors: William LAFFERTY, Mikhail Bashtanov, Peter Crossley, Abi Graham, Gary Jepps, Richard Lintern, Stuart Lowe, Yang Lu, James Onslow, Neil Pollock, Sebastian Rammensee, Richard Janse van Rensburg, Steve Wakefield, Peter Eugster

Publication number: 20220244571Abstract: Electrically-switchable flexible ophthalmic lenses for conforming to the eye of a user are provided. The lenses comprise: a liquid crystal cell for changing an optical characteristic of the ophthalmic lens, and having a cell gap thickness between a first inner surface and a second inner surface with liquid crystal therebetween, the flexible liquid crystal cell having a chord radius, w, and comprising: a plurality of support members, each support member is arranged to maintain the cell gap thickness by providing support at one or more support locations within the cell, and the support members are arranged such that the support locations form two rings concentric with a centre of the liquid crystal cell, the first ring located a chord measurement of 0.26-0.34w from the centre of the liquid crystal cell and the second ring located a chord measurement of 0.52-0.70w from the centre of the liquid crystal cell.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 5, 2022Publication date: August 4, 2022Applicant: CooperVision International LimitedInventors: Robert OAG, Robin FRITH, Mikhail BASHTANOV

Publication number: 20200060578Abstract: A sensing system for determining the location and orientation of an object which comprises a magnetic tag. The sensing system comprises selection coils and interrogation coils. The selection coils are arranged to generate a spatially-varying DC magnetic field from which the location of the tag can be determined in use. At least some of the interrogation coils are arranged to generate one or more AC magnetic fields and at least some of the interrogation coils are arranged to receive harmonics, intermodulation products or time dependent variations of the AC magnetic fields, from which the orientation of the tag is determined in use.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 18, 2017Publication date: February 27, 2020Inventors: David POOLEY, Mikhail BASHTANOV
