  • Patent number: 11679349
Abstract: A method of filtering a liquid feed is described, comprising passing a liquid feed through a single pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) system and recovering the retentate and permeate from the system in separate containers. A method of filtering a liquid feed is also described comprising passing a liquid feed through a tangential flow filtration (TFF) system, recovering permeate and a portion of the retentate from the system in separate containers without recirculation through the TFF system, and recirculating the remainder of the retentate through the TFF system at least once. The methods of the invention can be performed using an SPTFF or a TFF system that comprises manifold segments to serialize the flow path of the feed and retentate without requiring diverter plates.

  • Publication number: 20230123639
Abstract: A porous electrospun polymeric nanofiber liquid filtration medium, such as an electrospun mats, used for the removal of viral particles (e.g., parvovirus) and other particles in the 18 nm to 30 nm size range from fluid streams, having a mean flow bubble point measured with perfluorohexane above 100 psi. The electrospun medium includes nanofibers having an average fiber diameter of about 6 nm to about 13 nm, and the nanofiber liquid filtration medium has a mean pore size ranging from about 0.01 ?m to about 0.03 ?m, a porosity ranging from about 80% to about 95%, a thickness ranging from about 1 ?m to about 100 ?m, and a liquid permeability greater than about 10 LMH/psi. The high porosity of the electrospun mats enable much higher water fluxes, thus reducing the time required to complete virus filtration steps on a fluid stream.

  • Patent number: 11305271
Abstract: Adsorptive media for chromatography, particularly ion-exchange chromatography, derived from a shaped fiber. In certain embodiments, the functionalized shaped fiber presents a fibrillated or ridged structure which greatly increases the surface area of the fibers when compared to ordinary fibers. Also disclosed herein is a method to add surface pendant functional groups that provides cation-exchange or anion-exchange functionality to the high surface area fibers. This pendant functionality is useful for the ion-exchange chromatographic purification of biomolecules, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs).

  • Patent number: 11154821
Abstract: A composite liquid filtration platform including a composite filtration medium featuring an electrospun polymeric nanofiber layer collected on a porous membrane. When in use, the porous membrane acts as a prefilter used upstream from the polymeric nanofiber layer to remove particles from a liquid stream flowing through the composite filtration structure. The nanofiber layer, positioned downstream from the porous membrane, is used as the retentive layer for critical filtration to provide biosafety assurance, and is responsible for capturing microorganisms like bacteria, mycoplasma or viruses. The composite liquid filtration platform provided herein exhibits permeability advantages over conventional porous membranes or nanofiber mats spun on coarse non-wovens.

  • Patent number: 10722602
Abstract: A method for removing microorganisms from liquid samples and a nanofiber containing liquid filtration medium that simultaneously exhibits high liquid permeability and high microorganism retention. Microorganisms such as bacteria, particularly B. Diminuta, are removed from a liquid by passing the liquid through a porous nanofiber containing filtration medium having a B. Diminuta LRV greater than about 9, and the nanofiber(s) has a diameter from about 10 nm to about 1,000 nm. Another method for removing microorganisms such as bacteria and Mycloplasma, includes passing the liquid through a porous nanofiber containing filtration medium having a microorganism LRV greater than about 8, and the nanofiber(s) has a diameter from about 10 nm to about 1,000 nm. The filtration medium can be in the form of a fibrous electro spun polymeric nanofiber liquid filtration medium mat.

  • Patent number: 10582310
Abstract: A transducer includes an acoustic reflector, an acoustic coupler and one or more thermoacoustic frames. The acoustic coupler is disposed proximate to an output of the transducer and each of the thermoacoustic frames is disposed between the acoustic reflector and the acoustic coupler. The thermoacoustic frames, the acoustic reflector and the acoustic coupler form a resonator with each of the thermoacoustic frames configured to emit a broadband acoustic signal in response to receiving electrical energy. Additionally, the resonator is configured to emit a narrowband acoustic signal at the transducer output in response to receiving the broadband acoustic signal. A method includes adjusting a frequency of the narrowband acoustic signal by controlling a spacing between the thermoacoustic frames and one or more components of the resonator. Thermoacoustic device embodiments capable of resonant emission of intense ultrasound radiation generated by sheets of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 10570171
Abstract: Novel compositions for removing impurities such as, protein aggregates, from a sample containing a protein of interest, e.g., an antibody. Such compositions can be used prior to the virus filtration step during protein purification, to remove aggregates and protect the virus filter from fouling, therefore improving virus filter capacity. A porous solid support including a co-polymer having at least two monomers, wherein at least one of the monomers comprises acrylamide and at least a second monomer comprises a hydrophobic binding group, where the solid support selectively binds protein aggregates, thereby to separate the monomeric protein of interest from the protein aggregates. The method can be performed under neutral to high pH and high conductivity conditions.
