  • Patent number: 8234382
Abstract: The invention proposes a method of controlling a network to which a communication device is connected, comprising the steps of obtaining (S13) connection capability information from the network and evaluating (S14) a connection service based on to the obtained connection capability information. The invention also proposes a correspondingly adapted communication device. Thus, network capabilities related failures may be eliminated since the communication device is aware of the relevant connection capabilities in the network etc.

  • Patent number: 7180868
Abstract: A method of setting a timer associated with a protocol supportinga data link in a digital mobile communication system in a connection section. At least one party (MSC/IWF, MS) to the connectionsection monitors if the need to change the timer value has arisen. Should such a need be detected, the timer value (S) is set to avalue deviating from the initial value. The need to change the timer value (S) is also determined during the connection, such asin handover, for example by measuring the propagation delay associated with the connection section. This may be implemented by either of the parties to the connection transmitting to the other party a frame (F) which is selected/formed such that the party receiving the frame sends an acknowledgement (Ack) to the transmitting party. The party which transmitted the frame measures the timefrom the moment of transmission of the frame (F) to the arrival of the acknowledgement (Ack) and deduces the propagation delay (D) therefrom.

  • Patent number: 7042844
Abstract: The present invention discloses a network system, in which data is transmitted in the form of transmission frames, the system including a network control unit (4) for controlling communication in the network and a terminal (2) for receiving and transmitting data from/to the network control unit (4). When the network control unit (4) receives a request for changing from a first user data rate to a second user data rate it adds/deletes fill data (FD) to/from a transmission frame corresponding to the requested change in the user data rate for transmitting data to the terminal (2) at the second user data rate. The terminal (2) detects the change in the amount of fill data (FD) and changes the user data rate transmitted to the network control unit (4) according to the detected change. In this system, it is possible to smoothly change the data rate without affecting the quality of service.

  • Patent number: 7000030
Abstract: The invention relates to an interworking method and apparatus for a data connection between a first terminal supporting a first processing scheme and a second terminal supporting a second processing scheme, wherein the first and second processing schemes are checked, and the first processing scheme is adapted to the second processing scheme, when the checking indicates that the first processing scheme is not supported by the second terminal. Thus, a mapping is performed and different processing capabilities are used on different portions of the data connection.

  • Patent number: 6996079
Abstract: The invention relates to radio systems and particularly to a handover and interworking between two radio systems utilizing different link protocols. According to the invention, in a handover the radio link protocol of the old (handover source) radio system is also retained after the handover in the new (target) radio system. The “old” radio link protocol is merely adapted to a physical traffic channel of the new radio system. One manner of implementing the adaptation to the traffic channel is to set up the radio link protocol of the “new” radio system between the mobile station and the interworking function and to transmit the radio link protocol frames of the “old” radio system within the radio link protocol of the new radio system.

  • Publication number: 20050227695
Abstract: The invention relates to flow control in data transmission in telecommunications systems, particularly in wireless telecommunications systems. In the present invention flow control information is tunnelled over a connection leg which does not support flow control on a lower transmission protocol layer underlying a user level. The nodes at the both ends of the leg are arranged to use the flow control information to control the data flow on the lower transmission protocol level of the leg. In other words, the transmission of new data on the lower transmission protocol level is ceased or the data rate decreased when the flow control information activates the flow control in the transmitting node, and similarly, the transmission of new data on the lower transmission protocol level is restarted or the data rate increased when the conveyed flow control information deactivates the flow control.

  • Patent number: 6865163
Abstract: The invention relates to data transmission in telecommunication systems and particularly in radio systems. The invention employs “payload numbering” instead of or in addition to conventional frame numbering. Data (61) is split into fixed-length data blocks or payload units (62). The size of a block is preferably equal to or smaller than the shortest information field in frames (63) of the protocol(s) used. Each protocol frame carries one or more payload units. In an optimum situation the length of the information field in a protocol frame equals n * the length of the payload unit, where n is an integer. Instead of frame numbering (in some special cases possibly in addition to it) the protocol frame carries payload numbers both for indicating the payload units (data blocks) conveyed in the protocol frame and for acknowledging the received blocks.

  • Patent number: 6795437
Abstract: The invention relates to an interconnection between different types of communications networks. A first core network element is connected to a first access network by means of a first protocol stack used between the first core network element and a network element in the first access network. A second core network element is connected to a second access network by means of a second protocol stack used between the second core network element and a network element in the second access network. The first core network element is arranged to support and use at least parts of the second protocol stack towards the second core network element, and the second core network element is adapted to extend the parts of the second protocol stack towards the first core network element.

  • Publication number: 20020126317
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting a facsimile message via a communication network is described, wherein the facsimile message is at least partly transmitted to the called party using an agreed file transfer protocol. When a negotiating step was not successful, the facsimile message is transmitted using a normal facsimile protocol. Thus, the use of file transfer protocol is allowed as a means for transferring facsimile message data, such that a facsimile transmission via packet-switched networks like the Internet can be provided. With modem types other than those defined especially for facsimile use, the date transfer speed is remarkably higher, such that lower transmission costs can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20020001287
Abstract: The invention relates to a communications system comprising a transmitter (30) and a receiver (30) for transmitting transparent data over a connection (32) therebetween. The bandwidth (b2) assigned to the connection (32) is wider than the bandwidth (b1) actually required by a nominal bit rate of the transparent data so as allow the use of a retransmitting protocol over the connection by enabling data transmission to stop and wait for retransmission of the incorrectly received frames while a transparent connection with a constant delay and a constant bit rate and a low BER is provided to the user. The incoming transparent data stream with a constant bit rate is buffered into a transmission buffer (300) and the frames received over the retransmitting connection (32) are buffered into a receiving buffer (310) which outputs the transparent data at the constant nominal bit rate.
