  • Patent number: 8254056
Abstract: Embodiments in accordance with the present invention provide a magnetic disk drive that reliably prevents entry of water or other form of liquid through a breathing hole for the enhanced performance, reliability, and the like. In one embodiment, a box body forming part of a hard disk drive (HDD) has a top cover. The top cover includes a breathing hole drilled therein. The breathing hole serves to eliminate any pressure difference between an inside and an outside of the HDD. A fiber waterproof body, which includes a waterproof fiber material or the like, is fitted in a large-diameter hole of the breathing hole. A pore waterproof body, formed by bundling up a large number of slender pores, is mounted in a small-diameter hole of the breathing hole.

  • Patent number: 8199427
Abstract: A disk drive. The disk drive includes a head-slider, an actuator, a ramp and a shroud. The head-slider is configured to fly above the disk. The actuator is configured to support the head-slider and to swing about a pivot shaft to move the head-slider in a radial direction of the disk. The actuator may also be configured to rest on the ramp in a stand-by position. The shroud includes an inner peripheral side surface and an outer peripheral side surface. The shroud is configured to control an air-stream which flows in a direction from the pivot shaft toward the head-slider. The inner peripheral side surface and the outer peripheral side surface are configured to blast the head-slider with the air-stream upon spinning the disk when the head-slider is positioned away from the disk in the stand-by position.

  • Patent number: 7724463
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to effectively remove adhesion on a head slider. In an embodiment of the present invention, a hard disk controller/multiprocessing unit (HDC/MPU) raises the temperature on the surface of a head slider with a heating element on the head slider to remove adhesion on the head slider while an actuator stays on a ramp. The HDC/MPU varies the amount of heat in accordance with the temperature sensed by a temperature sensor. This achieves removal of the adhesion on the head slider, maintaining reliability.

  • Publication number: 20060081527
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention eliminate, in an elemental analysis made of fine particles trapped using a conventional analytical filter, a hindrance to correct identification of elements of the fine particles as an original object of measurement that would otherwise cause the X-ray analyzer to measure elements of a filter base in addition to those of the fine particles. In one embodiment, an analytical filter includes a filter base and a metallic coating film. The filter base made of a resin has a plurality of filtering holes, each having a hole diameter ranging between about 100 nm and 1000 nm. The metallic coating film is formed on one face of the filter base through ion sputtering of gold (Au). The metallic coating film is so thick that an electron beam from an X-ray analyzer does not penetrate therethrough and the filtering holes are not plugged up. The metallic coating film is at least about 40 nm thick and is preferably about 40 nm to 100 nm thick.

  • Patent number: 6496318
Abstract: A method and system which prevents starting-up problems in plural magnetic disk storage devices included in a disk array system during restart following halt of the magnetic disk storage devices after long term operation. The disk array system includes the plural magnetic disk storage devices, a microprocessor unit (MPU) which controls the magnetic disk storage devices, a control memory, a parity calculator, and cache memory. The control memory contains a operation time control table in which a tolerable continuous operation time Ti and a halt time Ts are stored. Each of the magnetic disk storage devices is intentionally stopped individually for the halt time Ts at time interval of the tolerable continuous operation time Ti.

  • Patent number: 5856281
Abstract: Gas contaminants generated from the grease of bearings operating in a magnetic disk device adhere to the magnetic head and causing stiction and magnetic head crash. Such bearings are typically spindle bearings and pivot bearings. In operation, heat is generated that causes the bearing grease to generate the gases. By heat treating the grease, slow evaporating substances of hydrocarbon compounds with carbons of C9 to C13 in the grease are reduced to not more than 0.001 wt. % of the grease. The grease can then be used to lubricate the bearings. The heat treatment is performed at a temperature of 60.degree. to 100.degree. C. at a pressure of 10.sup.-3 to 10.sup.-8 torr. The assembled, lubricated bearings can be heat treated separately from the magnetic disk device or the heat treatment can take place after the bearings have been assembled in the magnetic disk device.
