  • Publication number: 20230358936
Abstract: A filter for an imaging device includes an array of phase-modulating nanostructures formed on a substrate. At least one phase-modulating nanostructure of the array of phase-modulating nanostructures changes a phase of incident light a predetermined amount based on a first width and a second width of the phase-modulating nanostructure in which the first width is perpendicular to the second width. In one embodiment, the filter focuses light incident on the filter towards a center a pixel of an image sensor at an image plane. In another embodiment, the phase-modulating nanostructure is formed from a material having a refractive index that is greater than 1.9. The filter can also be used to form a quarter-wave plate.

  • Publication number: 20220365280
Abstract: An optical out-coupler unit for out-coupling light from a waveguide, comprising a substrate having a planar top surface, a waveguide arranged on the top surface of the substrate and having a facet, a reflective surface, wherein the reflective surface is arranged spaced apart from the facet and opposing the facet, wherein the reflective surface is inclined with respect to a normal to the top surface of the substrate by more than 45°. The optical out-coupler may be part of a photonic integrated chip (PIC).

  • Patent number: 11187582
Abstract: Hyperspectal imagers including reflective and transmissive metasurfaces are disclosed. The described metasurfaces are used collectively to disperse and focus light of different wavelengths and incident angles on a focal plane. The disclosed devices are compact and light, and can be used in systems and applications requiring stringent form factors.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 26, 2020
Date of Patent: November 30, 2021
    Assignee: CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Inventors: MohammadSadegh Faraji-Dana, Ehsan Arbabi, Andrei Faraon
  • Patent number: 11092486
Abstract: Compact optical devices such as spectrometers are realized with metasurfaces within a dielectric medium confined by reflective surfaces. The metasurfaces control the phase profiles of the reflected electromagnetic waves within the device. In a compact spectrometer, the metasurfaces within the device separate the electromagnetic waves in different wavelengths. The metasurfaces are designed according to their phase profile by varying the size of the array of scatterers.

  • Patent number: 10690809
Abstract: A metasurface is defined by an array of scattering elements having a U shape, where the geometrical dimensions determining the U shape are determined according to the different phase profiles that the metasurface is meant to generate in response to an incident electromagnetic wave. The metasurface, therefore, generates different phase shifts as a function of the incident electromagnetic wave.
