Publication number: 20220194438Abstract: A well car for carrying shipping containers has a pair of end structures supported by railcar trucks, a pair of first and second spaced apart side beams extending between the end structures and a well defined therebetween. Container support cross-members are mounted between the side sills in a position to support an end of a shipping container load carried within the well. An array of elongate members is provided to divide the opening into smaller spaces and to prevent excessively large openings from being left. The elongate members can have different forms, whether rigid hollow structural sections, rods, or cables. The arrays of elongate members are oriented at oblique angles along the railcar body.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2020Publication date: June 23, 2022Applicant: NATIONAL STEEL CAR LIMITEDInventors: Sina Moloodi, Shayan Liaghat, Mohammed Al-Kaabi

Patent number: 8973508Abstract: A railroad freight car has lifting apparatus at the body bolsters of the car. In addition it has lifting interface members mounted to underlie the side sills near the wheel-well cut-outs of the side beams. The lifting interface members stand downwardly proud of adjacent structure and fasteners heads, such that when lifting apparatus, such as a hydraulic lift, is brought to bear it contacts the lifting interface member first, rather than damaging adjacent structure, be it the side sills themselves, lateral cross-members such as cross-bearers and cross-ties, or diagonal struts. It may also tend to prevent consequent damage to the end bulkheads. The lifting interface members may permit the replacement of wheelsets in the field. The lifting members may be sacrificial, such that they may be replaced when worn or damaged.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2013Date of Patent: March 10, 2015Assignee: National Steel Car LimitedInventors: Mohammed Al-Kaabi, Jamal Hematian, Meysam Safari

Patent number: 7234904Abstract: A coil car has a pair of deep side sills and a trough structure mounted to, and suspended between, the deep side sills for carrying coils. The side sills extend between the rail car trucks and act as a pair of deep side beams for carrying vertical loads. The deep side sills are arranged to extend above and below the center sill of the coil car to give vertical stiffness to the coil car. The top chord members of the side sills are outwardly splayed relative to the bottom chord members of the side sills. Cross-bearers extend outwardly and away from the center sill to attach to the side sills. The trough structure has three parallel, longitudinally extending troughs—a central trough lying between two laterally outboard outer troughs. Each trough is shaped to cradle steel coils, or other similar loads, between its inwardly and downwardly sloping shoulder plates. The shoulder plates are lined with cushioning to buffer coils during loading or travel.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2005Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: National Steel Car LimitedInventors: Mohammed Al-Kaabi, Ilario A. The trough structure may have three parallel, longitudinally extending troughs—a central trough lying between two laterally outboard outer troughs. Each trough is shaped to cradle steel coils, or other similar loads, between its inwardly and downwardly sloping shoulder plates. The car has movable coil stops to discourage longitudinal shifting of loaded coils. Retractable rollers or sliders mounted to a movable coil stop facilitate the repositioning of the coil stop during loading, and the coil stop has a mid-span step and hand grabs to facilitate climbing over the coil stop by personnel walking along the trough structure.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2001Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: National Steel Car LimitedInventors: Ilario A.
