Publication number: 20140277553Abstract: Embodiments of the invention may provide a stem and a head and a liner that can be assembled together to form an implant, such as may be used in repair of the distal ulnoradial joint. A given head and liner and stem may be assembled to each other in more than one configuration, providing more than one possible external shape for a given set of stem and head and liner. The head may be non-symmetric about its midplane and may be open at both ends. A kit may contain more than one head assemblable to a given stem with an intermediate liner, with the various heads providing various different external shapes of the device.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Applicant: Ascension Orthopedics, Inc.Inventors: Jerome J. Patent number: 8529632Abstract: A hemi-arthroplasty implant (11) joint replacement for the base of the first metacarpal of the CMC joint is created which can effectively restore and reestablish functional joint mechanics. The implant (11) has a unique head section (13) creating a particular interrelation between a spherical head articular surface (19), that is received in a surgically prepared cavity in the trapezium, wherein a supporting neck (21) in a re-entrant region joins the head to a flat, generally oblong collar (15).Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2009Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Ascension Orthopedics, Inc.Inventors: Jerome J. Klawitter, Joseph P. Ritz, Monti R. Gourley, Ashley Degrood

Patent number: 8366780Abstract: A prosthetic implant comprising a head having a spherical pyrocarbon shell (13,73) that is attached to a metal substructure (17,77) via an intermediate element (15,45,75). A subassembly of the intermediate element and the pyrocarbon shell may be connected to the metal substructure via a metal split ring (19) that resides partially in each of two facing grooves (33,35) or via interengaging elements (85,87,91) that are provided in two juxtaposed cylindrical surfaces. The design is such that compressive forces applied to the implant at its spherical articulating surface are transferred via compression through the pyrocarbon shell to the metal substructure.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2007Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Assignee: Ascension Orthopedics, Inc.Inventors: Jerome J. Klawitter, Monti R. Gourley

Patent number: 6206918Abstract: A heart valve prosthesis having improved flow characteristics. A heart valve prosthesis includes a valve body and a pair of leaflet occluders. The valve body includes an interior surface that defines a central passage for blood flow. The pair of leaflet occluders are pivotably mounted in the passage via ears or tabs that are received in recesses formed in the interior surface that defines the central passage. The recesses are formed with sloped sidewalls to improve the blood flow therethrough. The recesses are also formed such that the leaflet occluder ears act against at least two surfaces that limit the motion of the leaflet occluder to provide a more stable movement that is less damaging to blood cells.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1999Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Sulzer Carbomedics Inc.Inventors: Louis A. Campbell, Monti R. Gourley

Patent number: 5207707Abstract: A tri-leaflet heart valve wherein the leaflets have supporting ears adapted to slide in curved tracks provided in an annular body. The leaflets ears are further supported and guided by conical-segment surfaces adjacent the curved grooves. A common stop between two grooves for adjacent leaflets limits the motion of the leaflets as the valve closes. Posts between opposed grooves for each leaflet arrest the motion of a leaflet if the leaflets are closing simultaneously closed position. Each leaflet comprises a substantially planar surface with a central vertex where all three leaflets meet in closed position. Edges of the leaflets adjacent the curved grooves are canted up-stream and are scalloped to form ears which slide in the curved grooves.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1992Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Carbomedics, Inc.Inventor: Monti R.
