Patent number: 11717791Abstract: Two-dimensional material based filters, their method of manufacture, and their use are disclosed. In one embodiment, a membrane may include an active layer including a plurality of defects and a deposited material associated with the plurality of defects may reduce flow therethrough. Additionally, a majority of the active layer may be free from the material. In another embodiment, a membrane may include a porous substrate and an atomic layer deposited material disposed on a surface of the porous substrate. The atomic layer deposited material may be less hydrophilic than the porous substrate and an atomically thin active layer may be disposed on the atomic layer deposited material.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2020Date of Patent: August 8, 2023Assignees: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum & MineralsInventors: Rohit N. Karnik, Suman Bose, Michael S. H. Boutilier, Nicolas G. Hadjiconstantinou, Tarun Kumar Jain, Sean C. O'Hern, Tahar Laoui, Muataz A. Atieh, Doojoon Jang

Publication number: 20230227705Abstract: A new and innovative nanofluid is provided including carbide-derived carbon nanoparticles suspended in a base fluid, and a method of preparing the same. In one example, the inventors have demonstrated that a nanofluid including CDC nanoparticles suspended in a base fluid of water had an increased thermal conductivity as compared to water alone. In other examples, the provided nanofluid may include CDC nanoparticles suspended in a base fluid other than water, such as antifreeze mixtures or other suitable cooling or heating fluids. During preparation of the provided nanofluid, the base fluid and CDC nanoparticles mixture may be subjected to sonication. In some instances, the CDC nanoparticles may be functionalized, such as by a carboxylation process. In some instances, the CDC nanoparticles may be emulsified, such as by being mixed with a surfactant.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2021Publication date: July 20, 2023Inventors: Tareq A. Patent number: 11135546Abstract: Two-dimensional material based filters, their method of manufacture, and their use are disclosed. The filters may include at least one active layer disposed on a porous substrate. The at least one active layer may include intrinsic and/or intentional formed pores. In some embodiments, the flow resistance of the porous substrate may be selected to limit flow through defects and intrinsic pores in the at least one active layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2013Date of Patent: October 5, 2021Assignees: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum & MineralsInventors: Rohit N.
