  • Patent number: 8178249
Abstract: A control system for controlling the amount of water in at least one fluid stream that is passed through a fuel cell stack comprises a humidifier arrangement, a sensor and a controller. The humidifier arrangement is operable to humidify the fluid stream. The sensor is disposed downstream of the humidifier arrangement and configured to measure at least one characteristic of the fluid stream. The at least one characteristic of fluid stream is indicative of the amount of water in the fluid stream. The controller is configured to receive a signal from the sensor and to use the signal to determine a difference between an amount of water in the fluid stream and a target amount of water. The controller is operable to control the humidifier arrangement to control the amount of water in the fluid stream based on the difference.

  • Patent number: 6368735
Abstract: A fuel cell power generation system for powering an electric vehicle. The system comprises a low temperature fuel cell, a reactor comprising a reformer for converting hydrogen-containing fuel into a reformate gas comprising a hydrogen gas stream and a by-product gas stream. The reactor further comprises and a metal membrane separator for separating the hydrogen gas stream from the by-product gas stream. A metal hydride buffer is provided in line between the fuel cell and the membrane separator. The metal hydride buffer is capable of selectively storing hydrogen from the hydrogen gas stream and releasing the hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 6315820
Abstract: A method of manufacturing thin foil alloys through a series of steps. A carrier having a polished carrier surface is placed within a deposition chamber. The carrier surface is generally polished to a mirrored surface finish. A sacrificial layer is applied atop the carrier surface. The sacrificial layer is made of a material that may be easily dissolved or separated from the carrier surface to remove the metal foil. The carrier surface and sacrificial layer are placed within the deposition chamber. The sacrificial layer is exposed to an evaporated first metal which becomes deposited upon the sacrificial layer. An evaporated second metal is then applied concurrently or sequentially with the first metal. The first and second evaporated metals solidify on the sacrificial layer to form a multilayer foil. At this point, the multilayer foil includes discrete layers or areas of the evaporated metals.

  • Patent number: 5948298
Abstract: A battery heating system for the batteries of an electrical vehicle includes a plurality of electrical heaters. The electrical heaters are apportioned into a plurality of groups, the groups coupled to independently-switchable voltage sources. One or more of the electrical heaters may have a parallel/series design for their resistive heater elements, to improve the reliability of those heaters.
