A thermal barrier (12) is disposed within the housing and positioned between an outer perimeter of the article storage area (76) and the remainder of the internal cavity so as to substantially divide the internal cavity into first and second thermally separated sections (17a–b), with the cooling unit being located in the first section (17a). An opening in a portion of the housing is located in at least one of the first or second sections (17a–b), and a first air moving device is positioned in one of the first or second sections (17a–b) for causing an air flow path which removes heat developed by the cooling unit, from the first section inside the cavity.

Abstract: In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a material, such as a plastic film, is used to separate independent food elements. The independent food elements and the separation material are packaged together using a unifying outer package. At a point in time when the customer decides to eat the food, the outer package is opened and the film that separates the different food elements is removed, either manually or automatically. This marks the first point in time that the separate elements come into contact with each other. Therefore, the food product is maintained at the highest level of integrity until the time of usage by the customer. Methods and a machine for layering the contents of the packages so as to form a completed assembly for the packaged elements is also described.

Abstract: An article handling apparatus having a article storage area includes a removable article storage structure adapted for being positioned therein. The removable article storage structure comprises an elongate article storage bin having, for example, a rectangular cross-section. One sidewall of the bin includes an elongate article-loading opening therein. At least two elongate flaps are provided for closing the opening, a first flap that is hinged along a first longitudinal edge of the opening, and a second flap that is hinged along a second longitudinal edge of the opening and opposed to the first longitudinal edge. Closure of the flaps over the opening results in overlap of the distal ends of the flaps, and therefore a complete closing of the opening. Such complete closing of the opening also presents smooth surfaces along the inside surfaces of the bin to the stored articles. The smooth surfaces function to unobtrusively guide the stored articles out of the bin during a dispensing operation.

Abstract: An article dispensing apparatus embodied, for example, as a vending machine, including a controllably positioned suction hose dispenser for retrieving articles from a storage area. In one embodiment, an airflow control mechanism, i.e., a vacuum or suction release (i.e., breaker), is used to facilitate a “quick-release” of the article being handled. A mechanical linkage constructed and operating in accordance with the invention is used to activate, for example, the breaker in response to mechanical contact by the article handling mechanism. Such operation thereby causes a rapid equalization of air pressure inside the housing towards ambient when it is time for the article handling mechanism to release the selected article.
