  • Patent number: 4106169
Abstract: An improved slant axis rotary mechanism including a housing defining an operating chamber, the operating chamber having an outer spherical wall, an inner spherical wall and opposed, generally radially extending end walls extending between the inner and outer spherical walls. A rotor is located within the chamber and includes a spherical hub carrying seals engaging the inner spherical wall and an annular flange carrying seals engaging both the end and outer spherical walls. A shaft is journalled in the housing and has an angularly offset portion within the chamber which, in turn, journals the rotor and gears carried by the rotor and the housing establish a timed rotary relationship between the shaft and the rotor. At least one elongated slot is provided in one of the walls and opens into the chamber. Means are provided for supplying a lubricant to the slot for lubricating the seal on the rotor engaging the wall having the slot.

  • Patent number: 4059370
Abstract: A rotary engine having a high surface to volume ratio including a housing having intake and exhaust ports and defining a chamber, a shaft journalled in the housing to extend therethrough and having an eccentric within the chamber, and a rotor on the eccentric within the chamber, the rotor having a body consisting essentially of a material having a low coefficient of thermal conductivity.

  • Patent number: 4057036
Abstract: An improved rotary engine including a housing having walls defining an operating chamber, a prechamber within the housing, an opening in one of the walls establishing fluid communication between the chamber and the prechamber, and means for introducing fuel into the prechamber. A shaft is journalled in the housing and extends through the chamber while a rotor is journalled on the shaft and within the chamber. The rotor has a surface cyclically brought into proximity with the wall including the opening and the opening therein for cyclically compressing an oxygen-containing medium within the prechamber. Means, including a portion of the surface, are employed for varying the effective size of the opening to thereby control the flow of combustion gases from the prechamber to the chamber at a desired rate to achieve a desired combustion characteristic.

  • Patent number: 4008986
Abstract: An improved corner seal for rotary mechanisms, such as trochoidal or slant axis rotary mechanisms. The mechanism includes a housing defining a chamber with a rotor movable therein. The rotor includes a piston seal receiving bore and a piston seal is received in the bore and sealingly engages one wall of the chamber. An apex seal receiving groove is located in the rotor and intersects the bore. An apex seal is received in the groove and sealingly engages another wall of the chamber. A ring-like expander seal is within the bore and sealingly engages the piston seal and the bore when gas under pressure is directed to the bore from the groove.

  • Patent number: 3982861
Abstract: An improved slant axis rotary mechanism of the type including a housing, a shaft journalled in the housing, an angularly offset portion on the shaft and a rotor journalled on the angularly offset portion. The angularly offset portion includes a peripheral thrust collar and the rotor is formed of two pieces which sandwich the thrust collar. One of the rotor pieces includes a central cavity spaced from the angularly offset portion and a plurality of bolts are within the cavity and secure the pieces of the rotor together.
