Publication number: 20230310164Abstract: Knee implants and components thereof are disclosed. A femoral component of a knee implant may include a reduced constraint region arranged on a portion of a patella path. The reduced constraint region may be configured to provide increased freedom-of-movement of a patella traveling over the reduced constraint region. The increased freedom-of-movement may be with respect to medial-lateral movement and/or internal-external rotation of the patella. The patella path may include a constraint region (e.g., a trochlear groove) positioned inferiorly of the reduced constraint region. A patella may travel within the reduced constraint region during extension (or partial flexion) and within the trochlear groove during flexion. A prosthetic patella having a raised portion is also disclosed. The raised portion may be configured to facilitate engagement of the prosthetic patella with the trochlear groove of the femoral component as the patella transitions from the reduced constraint region to the trochlear groove.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2021Publication date: October 5, 2023Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. LimitedInventor: Nathaniel M. Lenz

Publication number: 20230310165Abstract: An insert for use in a knee prosthesis is disclosed. In one embodiment, the insert includes a medial compartment and a lateral compartment. The medial compartment includes a top surface having a concave surface or curve with a more posterior sulcus and increased anterior lip. The lateral compartment includes a top surface having at least a segment or portion with a convex surface or curve. Thus arranged, the insert is arranged and configured to provide improved stability for varying grades of PCL deficiencies compared to existing inserts that have a mid-line sulcus and lateral convexity. In addition, the insert provides improved lateral posterior translation compared to existing designs with a concave or flat lateral articulation that lack a lateral posterior convexity.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 22, 2021Publication date: October 5, 2023Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. LimitedInventors: Christopher B. Carr, Nathaniel M. Lenz

Publication number: 20230056596Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and a method for registering a surgical site to a surgical navigation system when the surgical site contains an implant for revision joint replacement surgery. The method creates a depth map of the surgical site and provides a possible identification of the existing implant using surface matching algorithms. The model of the implant is iteratively oriented with respect to the to the depth map until an optimal fit is achieved. Once the implant has been identified and localized, the registered landmarks are used in robotic-assisted surgery.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2022Publication date: February 23, 2023Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. Patent number: 10631885Abstract: A gauge assembly includes a distal femur gauge including medial and lateral condyle paddles each having a shape and size corresponding to a pre-operative planned distal resection of a patient's femur, and a tibial cutting block connected to the distal femur gauge. The condyle paddles include features, for example, pin-receiving holes, that permit intra-operative anterior-posterior and/or internal-external adjustment of the position of the distal femur gauge. The tibial cutting block includes features, for example, pin-receiving slot and holes, that permit fixing of the varus-valgus and flexion-extension degrees of freedom prior to fixing the internal-external and medial-lateral degrees of freedom.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2013Date of Patent: April 28, 2020Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Zachary C. Wilkinson, Nathaniel M. Lenz, Randy C. Winebarger

Patent number: 9398958Abstract: Tibial inserts and tibial femoral systems are provided for improved knee reconstruction systems. External rotation of a knee joint implant is enhanced by modifications to the post, providing a recess that allows clearance of the post against the corners of a box wall within the femoral component. The rotation provides for a more natural knee joint motion of the implant. The depth, size, and location of the post relief may be modified for certain applications to provide both improved rotational motion and constraint against undesirable motion of the knee.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2014Date of Patent: July 26, 2016Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventor: Nathaniel M. Lenz
