  • Publication number: 20090196306
Abstract: A method of providing contention access to a communication medium in a communications network includes transmitting priority information with each of a plurality of network nodes prior to a shared-contention transmission opportunity. The priority information for each node indicates a priority level of a frame that the node intends to transmit on the communication medium during the shared-contention transmission opportunity. At least one of the nodes is assigned to a contention window of a plurality of contention windows within the transmission opportunity based on the transmitted priority information.

  • Patent number: 6456619
Abstract: A system and method for supporting an interactive decision tree with placeholder capability include an interactive decision tree-based expert unit with an input enabled to receive user data that includes a user identification and with an output enabled to transmit system data. A memory is connected to the expert unit for storing the system data. Optionally, the user memory stores the identification and an associated decision tree node identifier representing a node in the decision tree visited by a user prior to termination of a communications link between the expert unit and the user. A device is provided for accessing the decision tree node identifier from the memory utilizing the associated user identification, so that a connecting device can automatically connect the user to a node within the decision tree based solely upon the user identification. Alternatively, the decision tree node identifier is transmitted to the user.

  • Patent number: 6275697
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing coordination of radio equipment. The apparatus may be used with any apparatus that is to be rendered inactive outside of a predetermined geographic area. The apparatus is equipped with a receiver for receiving a radio signal on a beacon frequency and for generating an enabling signal indicative of the presence of the radio signal. In the absence of the enabling signal, the apparatus is prevented from operating. The present invention is particularly well suited for providing coordinatible radio transmitters. The beacon signal is sent from an antenna in the geographic area in which the apparatus is permitted to transmit. The beacon signal includes a code which must match a code stored in the apparatus. In one embodiment of the present invention, the beacon signal also includes an authentication signature to prevent fraudulent beacons from improperly enabling equipment.

  • Patent number: 6249576
Abstract: A system and method for providing directory information with a call completion feature includes a data network server located on a data network for establishing a connection between a first communication device and a second communication device. The network server is configured to transmit a search command signal in response to a search command request and to transmit an establish-connection command signal in response to an establish-connection request, the establish-connection command signal being necessary to establish the connection between the first and second communication devices. A database is connected to the network server and is configured to transmit a first telephone number to the server in response to the search command signal. In a preferred embodiment, the establish-connection command signal is transmitted to a computer connected to the server, causing the computer to dial the first telephone number, thereby establishing the connection between the first and second communication devices.

  • Patent number: 6185413
Abstract: A mobile station for transmitting a mobile radio signal to a base station has a memory device in which a number of available applications are stored which can relate to different “carriers,” i.e., mobile radio network systems or service providers within a single mobile radio network. A selection device of the mobile station calculates expected charges for a desired connection for each of these applications which are being considered for the transmission connection. Based upon the calculations, the most cost-efficient application for the desired transmission is selected. The actual transmission of the communication data for the base station is then carried out on the basis of this application.

  • Patent number: 6169498
Abstract: A method for communicating location-specific messages includes storing a library of such messages within a portable device having a capability of randoly accessing the messages. Each location-specific message has a content that is related to a particular geographical location within a facility. At each of the geographical locations, there is a device-readable identification of an identifier for each location-specific message relating to that geographical location. In the preferred embodiment, the identifier is transmitted to the portable device wirelessly. Also in the preferred embodiment, the message library is contained on a recording medium that facilitates automated random access, such as a compact disk, and the portable device is a personal digital assistant (PDA). In an application of the method, map information may be prerecorded and supplemented or complemented with time-dependent information downloaded from a source.

  • Patent number: 6058435
Abstract: A routing method for an information distribution system, such as an automatic communications distribution system, allows substantial content freedom in the formulation of a message to the system. The messages are converted to a computer-searchable format and are subjected to content analysis to identify skills advantageous to responding to the messages. In one application, the incoming message is a facsimile transmission that is converted to computer-generated text information using an optical character recognition module. The freeform incoming message may also be a voice mail message converted using speech recognition techniques, or may be a video transmission, electronic mail or a Webpage referral. In an application of the method and system that includes a response from an agent of the system, resume data indicative of proficiencies of the agents with respect to skills advantageous to processing the communications are correlated with the identified desired skills for a particular incoming communication.

  • Patent number: 5872841
Abstract: A calendar system within a telephone system includes an interface for obtaining information from a calling party, calendar data which includes a calendar for a called party, and an agent. The agent, in response to a request to schedule a telephone call with the called party, searches the calendar of the called party to determine an available slot for the telephone call. After confirming that the available slot for the telephone call is acceptable to the calling party, the agent schedules the telephone call in the available slot of the calendar for the called party.

  • Patent number: 5864755
Abstract: A method for operating a wireless telephone system to provide emergency service for a wireless telephone operating in the wireless telephone system. In the present invention, the wireless telephone system receives a request to connect the wireless phone to a predetermined telephone number from the wireless telephone. The telephone system then queries the wireless telephone for a unique identifying number identifying the wireless telephone. The unique identifying number enables the wireless telephone system to connect the wireless telephone to the wireless telephone system. The wireless telephone system maintains a set of direct inward dialing numbers (DIDs) that are used exclusively for emergency calls. Each of the DID allows a caller outside of the wireless telephone system to direct a call to a telephone within the wireless telephone system. The emergency call is assigned one of these DIDs and that DID is linked to the unique identifying number of the telephone placing the emergency call.

  • Patent number: 5818924
Abstract: A mechanical keypad is attached to the outside of a protective cover. A switch allows a personal intelligent communicator to be operated either with the user interface of a mobile telephone handset or with a graphical user interface. When the cover is closed, the mechanical keypad serves for dialing telephone numbers. When the cover is open, the mechanical keypad is disabled, and the graphical user interface is revealed. The microphone and speaker of the personal intelligent communicator together operate as a speaker phone when the cover is open, and as a mobile telephone handset when the cover is closed. By use of an override switch, the personal intelligent communicator can also operate as a speaker phone when the cover is open.
