  • Patent number: 6497841
Abstract: A heat exchanger, or the heat exchanger component of a multi-function device, comprising a polymeric heat transfer material. The heat exchanger exhibits reduced voltage-induced breakdown of the polymeric material, which can lead to cross-contamination of the two fluids. Either or both of two approaches may be employed. The first approach modifies the polymeric material to increase its resistance to breakdown. The second approach employs at least one electrical bridge between the fluids in the two sides of the heat exchanger, thus placing the two fluids into electrical equilibrium.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 22, 1997
Date of Patent: December 24, 2002
    Assignee: Medtronic, Inc.
Inventors: Neil D. Plotkin, Roger J. Elgas, Robert F. Gremel, Robert V. Worrell
  • Patent number: 5928179
Abstract: Pulsatile cardiopulmonary flow closely approximating a natural heartbeat is generated in a heart-lung machine by using a proportioning valve to partly convey blood in the machine's cardiopulmonary circuit to the arterial supply line, and to partly recycle that blood into the cardiopulmonary circuit upstream of the arterial pump. The relative proportions of conveying and recycling are varied in accordance with a waveform approximating the waveform of a human heartbeat.

  • Patent number: 5738645
Abstract: In a venous/cardiotomy reservoir, substantially accurate volume indication and post-operative use are provided while preventing introduction of air into the reservoir outlet, by interposing a collapsible bag between the underside of a rigid reservoir housing and the reservoir outlet.

  • Patent number: 4541981
Abstract: The present invention provides microporous hollow fiber with improved structural and performance characteristics and a process and apparatus for preparing the improved fiber. The microporous hollow fiber possesses substantially uniform wall thickness, cross-sectional dimensions and porosity. Such characteristics are obtained by melt spinning hollow fiber precursor under defined conditions in a substantially vertically upward direction and subjecting the precursor to a symmetrical quenching step which may be achieved using a hollow annular structure surrounding the precursor. The structure, which is connected to a source of gas, has one or more openings on its inner surface that distribute the gas against the precursor in a substantially uniform manner.
