Patent number: 9138261Abstract: A spinal alignment system is disclosed that includes a rod and a plurality of uniplanar screw assemblies that include a screw, a cap, and a housing. The screw and cap are configured such that the relative angular displacement between the screw and the cap is limited to a first limit angle in a first plane and to a second limit angle in a second plane that is perpendicular to the first plane, the second limit angle being larger than the first limit angle. The housing is coupled to the cap and configured to maintain the cap in proximity with the head of the screw. The housing has two elongated elements forming a U-shaped saddle. The alignment system also includes a plurality of locking cap assemblies that capture the rod within the U-shaped saddle and are tightened to fixedly couple the rod to the respective uniplanar screw assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2011Date of Patent: September 22, 2015Assignee: SeaSpine, Inc.Inventors: Michael Di Lauro, Nicholas M. The improved spinal pedicle based construct may include a flexible membrane(s) or mechanism(s) incorporated between the anchoring component and the longitudinal membrane. The flexible membrane(s) incorporated may provide controlled motion of the functional spine unit connected to the anchoring component with respect to the posterior construct. Moreover, when the patient moves his or her back, the flexible membrane(s) may also divert a force away from the anchoring component, thereby reducing the chances of bone cracking.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2010Publication date: November 15, 2012Applicant: Seaspine, Inc.Inventors: Shahram Shaun Zamani, Nicholas M. Patent number: 8236055Abstract: An intervertebral prosthetic disc for replacing a damaged natural disc includes upper and lower vertebral body engaging surfaces, an exterior wall and one or more generally vertically oriented bone channels of limited cross-sectional area to allow bone to form and fuse into continuous or discontinuous struts between the bodies. The stiffness of the disc, while supporting the bodies, allows the distance therebetween to narrow sufficiently when subjected to a predetermined load such as the patient standing, walking, etc., to transfer sufficient energy to the bone struts to create one or more nonunion joints or pseudoarthrosis at locations along the struts. The disc includes stops to limit the movement thereof to an amount sustainable by the disc without resulting in fatigue failure.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: August 7, 2012Assignee: Seaspine, Inc.Inventor: Nicholas M. Cordaro

Publication number: 20120109321Abstract: A set of surgical components for use in a joint arthroplasty to reconstruct a head of a joint is provided. The set of surgical components can include a head member having a first articulating surface opposite a first fixation surface. The first fixation surface can define a first portion that extends outwardly from the first fixation surface. The set of surgical components can include a base member having a fixation peg with three generally triangular fins and a second fixation surface defined as a recess within a top surface of the fixation peg. The first portion of the head member can be received within the recess of the base member to couple the head member to the base member.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2012Publication date: May 3, 2012Applicant: BIOMET MANUFACTURING CORP.Inventors: Kevin T. Patent number: 8097036Abstract: A motion restoring intervertebral device includes first and second articulating components positioned between adjacent vertebrae with the articulating surface of the first component being formed by a circular domed convex projection having a first radius. The articulating surface of the second component is formed by a generally concave recess having the first radius in the medial-lateral direction and a second larger sweeping radius in the interior-posterior direction so that the components are capable of rotating against each other in all directions and translate against each other in the anterior-posterior direction, whereby translation away from the center of the first radius will produce device and joint distraction to limit excessive translation.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2006Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: SeaSpine, Inc.Inventors: Nicholas M. Cordaro, Colin M. Smith

Publication number: 20110029087Abstract: An intervertebral prosthesis and method includes an artificial interbody disc for engaging faces of adjacent natural vertebral bodies when a natural disc is replaced. Channels in the interbody disc can provide flexible characteristics to accommodate loads on the subject's spinal column. A bio-compatible filler material having a flexural stiffness of less than 12 GPa can encourage bone growth in the channels. The filler material may be inserted during an operation or pre-inserted in the disc channels during manufacturing of the disc.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2009Publication date: February 3, 2011Inventors: Thomas T. Haider, Nicholas M. Cordaro

Patent number: 7819923Abstract: The present invention is directed to a modular shoulder prosthesis having an adjustable radial offset and/or angular inclination provided by relative rotation of an adapter interdisposed between the stem and the head. Specifically, the interface configuration between the stem and the adapter, as well as between the adapter and the head are designed such that relative positioning of these components provides a continuous adjustment in the radial offset and/or angular inclination. Indicia are provided at the interface between the adapter and the head to precisely determine the magnitude and direction of the adjustment being made.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2005Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: Biomet Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: Kevin T Stone, Nicholas M Cordaro

Patent number: 7799083Abstract: A motion restoring prosthesis to be interposed between the ends of two bones adjoining a mammalian appendage or spinal joint is formed of two components with the components having inner cooperating articulating surfaces and outer bone engaging surfaces. At least one of the components has an inner section made of relatively hard, stiff material defining one or the articulating surfaces and an outer section made of a softer material defining the bone engaging surface. The softer material having a hardness/stiffness characteristic compatible with the bone to reduce stress shielding and more evenly distribute the forces from the articulating surfaces to the associate bone interface.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2006Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: Seaspine, Inc.Inventors: Colin M. Smith, Nicholas M. Cordaro

Patent number: 7771474Abstract: A transverse connector system for interconnecting two spinal rods includes a connector arranged to span the distance between the rods with a rod receiving recess and a pin receiving bore on each end. A one-piece pin member such as a set screw is disposed within each bore with an enlarged head protruding from the bottom of the connector so that when the set screw is retracted into the bore the head engages a side of the respective rod to clamp the rod within the recess. The connector may comprise two elongated members with a recess and pin receiving bore at one end of each member, a middle coupler which allows three degrees of freedom between the members to accommodate any anticipated spatial orientation between the members and a set screw for securing the other ends of the members together.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2006Date of Patent: August 10, 2010Assignee: SeaSpine, Inc.Inventor: Nicholas M.
