  • Patent number: 5327703
Abstract: A method for assembling a vacuum insulation panel is provided which includes the steps of: loading a quantity of microporous powder into a gas permeable pouch; pressing the pouch into a desired form; sealing the pouch; heating the powder to a temperature elevated above standard room temperature; inserting the pouch into a gas impermeable bag while the pouch and powder remain at the elevated temperature; evacuating gases from the powder pouch while it is at the elevated temperature; evacuating gases from the bag; and sealing the gas evacuated bag with the gas evacuated pouch therein to form a vacuum insulation panel. The heating of the powder may occur only just before insertion of the pouch into the bag, or may occur both before the powder is loaded into the pouch as well as just before insertion of the pouch into the bag. Further, a trace amount of Helium (at a pressure of approximately 1 mm Hg) may be put into the bag before it is sealed in order to permit testing of the sealed panel for leaks.

  • Patent number: 5272884
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sequentially operating a refrigeration system with multiple evaporators is provided in which only one evaporator is operated at a time and is run until a detected demand for cooling associated with that evaporator is satisfied, or until a predetermined time period has elapsed which corresponds to the normal run time for that evaporator. If the run time expires prior to the demand for cooling being satisfied, and if demand for cooling by another one of the evaporators is present, then operation of the first evaporator is terminated and the other evaporator is operated. Efficiency enhancements are provided such as prematurely initiating operation of a second evaporator at the conclusion of operation of a first evaporator if it appears that a demand for cooling by the second evaporator will occur within a short period of time following termination of operation of the first evaporator.

  • Patent number: 5251455
Abstract: A refrigeration appliance having at least two refrigeration compartments, each compartment having its own access door, is provided wherein there is a first evaporator for the first compartment the first evaporator operating at a first pressure level and a second evaporator for the second compartment, the second evaporator operating at a pressure level higher than the first pressure level. There is a control device for directing refrigerant to a selected one of the evaporators from a condenser and for preventing a flow of refrigerant into the first evaporator when refrigerant is being directed into the second evaporator to cool the second compartment. Around the first compartment is placed insulation having a higher thermal resistance than that placed around the second compartment since the first compartment is kept at a lower temperature that the second compartment. A phase change material may be used in association with one or both of the evaporators.

  • Patent number: 5157941
Abstract: A tube and fin-type evaporator is provided for a refrigerator having trapezoidally shaped fins with the wider portion of the fins disposed upstream in the cooling air flow path through the evaporator. The refrigerant tube passes through at least two rows of openings in these fins, and those openings are staggered and of different length to enhance turbulence and reduce tube shielding within the cooling air flow. Projections (dimples) on the fins adjacent the downstream side of each opening are provided to reduce dead air space downstream from the tube. Further, the openings are provided with collars to increase heat transfer between the fins and the tube. These projections and collars also serve to increase rigidity of the fins. The present invention enables the use of relatively small diameter, thin walled refrigerant tubes within the evaporator. Also, the tubes can be hydraulically expanded within the fins to enhance fin to tube contact and decrease heat transfer resistance.

  • Patent number: 5091233
Abstract: A getter structure is provided which can be handled for relatively short periods of time in open atmosphere and yet provides prolonged gettering action over relatively long periods of time when utilized in a sealed compartment. The getter structure has a thin flexible substrate upon which a getter material is applied. A barrier layer is applied to the getter material to prevent rapid reaction by the getter material with the atmosphere. The substrate or barrier layer is semi-permeable and is selected to provide the desired degree of permeation of the layer to the getter material to result in the action described. Such a getter structure is useful in a vacuum insulation panel, particularly in a getter system in a multiple compartment panel where different getter materials are utilized in different compartments so as to maximize the effectiveness of the use of the getter materials, while minimizing the cost of the getter materials required to provide the desired degree of gas gettering.

  • Patent number: 5082335
Abstract: A refrigeration appliance having a vacuum insulation system wherein a combination of vacuum thermal insulating panels and polyurethane foam provide the thermal insulating properties as well as structural support. The panels are to be spaced apart from one another with a space between the cabinet and appliance liner so that the foam will lock the panels in place. Also the panels are to be spaced from the corners of the cabinet to permit the foam to flow into the corners. The panels can be applied directly to the cabinet or they can be spaced between the cabinet and liner, held by spacers. In either case, an adhesive is used to hold the liners in position prior to introduction of the foam.

  • Patent number: 5031427
Abstract: An automatic washer having an improved sump formed in a bottom wall of the wash tube. The sump acts a collection zone for wash liquid and is spaced a sufficient distance from the wash basket and has sufficient capacity such that it can collect sufficient amount of wash liquid therein to present a constant supply of wash liquid to the pump while preventing the collected wash liquid from coming in contact with the basket while in the collection zone. The sump has a rear wall which forms a chord of the tube and a front wall which is flush with the circumferential wall of the tube. The sump also has a sloping bottom wall which communicates at a lowest portion thereof with the suction inlet of the pump, which the sump overlies.

  • Patent number: 5018328
Abstract: A vacuum insulation panel having flexible gas impermeable walls formed in multiple substantially adjacent compartments. A thermal break may advantageously be provided around the perimeter to prevent conduction of heat from a warmer side of the panel to a colder side, which thermal break can be easily constructed by utilizing webs of gas impermeable material with the foil carried thereon such that the foil has a width somewhat less than the width of the film and with two separate pieces of the firm rotated at 90.degree. to one another to provide a continuous area void of the foil.Multiple compartments are utilized to enhance the long term thermal characteristics of the panel by "protecting" the vacuum characteristics of at least one of the compartments by surrounding it with additional evacuated compartments.

  • Patent number: 4987627
Abstract: A method for laundering a textile wash load is provided for use in a vertical axis washing machine in which a concentrated detergent solution is continuously applied to a spinning wash load for a predetermined time period to thoroughly wet the clothes load. The initial charge of detergent is thoroughly mixed with the detergent in a recirculation step before being applied to the clothes load. The concentration wash liquid is incrementally applied to the spinning clothes load until a sufficient amount of wash liquid is detected as having been introduced to the wash zone. That amount of wash liquid is then recirculated and reapplied to the clothes load for a predetermined length of time. After the time period, additional water is added to the solution to dilute it to a normal concentration and then mechanical agitation and rinsing steps are conducted to complete the wash cycle.
