Patent number: 8028741Abstract: Apparatus for continuously casting metal strip includes a pair of counter-rotatable casting rolls laterally positioned to form a nip therebetween through which thin strip can be cast, a pair of confining side dams adjacent the ends of the casting rolls capable of confining a casting pool of molten metal supported on the casting rolls and formed on the casting surfaces above the nip, a metal delivery system disposed above the nip and capable of discharging molten metal to form the casting pool supported on the casting rolls, side dam actuators each capable of applying cyclical axial force to the side dams without leakage, and a control system capable of actuating at least one side dam actuator to cyclically vary the apply force of the side dam against the ends of the casting rolls during a casting campaign.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2008Date of Patent: October 4, 2011Assignee: Nucor CorporationInventors: Harold Bradley Rees, Nikolco S. Patent number: 7604039Abstract: In twin roll casting of steel strip, molten steel is introduced into the nip between parallel casting rolls to create a casting pool supported on casting surfaces of the rolls and the rolls are rotated to deliver solidified strip downwardly from the nip. Casting surfaces are textured by a random pattern of discrete projections, which may have an average surface distribution of between 5 and 200 peaks per mm2 and an average height of at least 10 microns. In order to suppress chatter defects, the molten steel also has manganese content of at least 0.55% by weight and a silicon content in the range of 0.1 to 0.35% by weight. The strip is thus capable of moving away from the casting pool at a speed of more than 60 meters per minute without substantial high speed chattering defects.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2006Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Castrip, LLCInventors: Nikolco S. Nikolovski, Rama Ballav Mahapatra, Lazar Strezov

Patent number: 6837301Abstract: Twin roll strip caster comprising parallel casting rolls one of which is mounted on moveable roll supports which allow it to move bodily toward and away from the other roll. A pair of roll biasing units comprising compression act on roll supports to bias the moving roll toward the other roll. Biasing units comprise compression springs acting on roll supports through thrust transmission structures and thrust reaction structures. The positions of thrust reaction structures are set by hydraulic cylinder units operable to vary the position of each reaction structure to replicate movements of the respective thrust transmission structure so as to maintain a constant compression of the biasing springs regardless of lateral movements of the roll supports.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2002Date of Patent: January 4, 2005Assignee: Castrip LLCInventors: Nikolco S. Nikolovski, Harold Roland Kaul

Patent number: 6604569Abstract: Twin roll casting of metal strip (20) by rotation of parallel casting rolls (16) supplied with molten metal through distributor (19a) and delivery nozzle (19b). X-ray scanner (44) continuously scans the thickness of strip (20) to produce a signal which is a continuous measure of thickness variation along the strip due to eccentricities of the casting rolls (16). This signal controls operation of roll drive motors (53) to impose a pattern of speed variation on the rolls so as to reduce the amplitude of the thickness variations.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2002Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Castrip, LLCInventors: Nikolco S. Nikolovski, Peter A Woodberry, Brett Gray
