The overt and covert authenticating indicia provide a means for voters and ballot counting entities to authenticate ballots by verifying the presence of sanctioned overt and covert authenticating indicia. The overt authenticating indicia is observable by the human eye without the use of any specialized tool or light source. The covert authenticating indicia are not readily apparent to the human eye and require the indicia to be resolved using a specialized tool, such as an ultraviolet or infrared light source.

The document comprises a substrate, a light reflective layer disposed over the substrate, a light diffusive layer disposed over the reflective layer, and bearer information overprinted on the reflective and diffusive layers. The diffusive layer has a diffusive background pattern that segments the reflective layer into a reflective background pattern comprising a plurality of reflective elements that interfere with the bearer information on a copy of the document. As a result, the diffusive background pattern allows the bearer information to become more readable on the document original by providing contrast to the bearer information and reducing the glare from light reflected from the reflective layer, while the reflective background pattern renders the bearer information unreadable on the document copy.

Abstract: Documents for minimizing and detecting fraudulent activity are provided. The document comprises a printable substrate, a first security feature that forms a latent copy-void warning message that visually appears on an electronically printed reproduction of the document original, and a second security feature that forms a latent validation message that visually appears on a digital reproduction of the document original. This arrangement allows a possessor of the printed document reproduction to quickly identify it as a counterfeit by virtue of the presence of the copy-void warning message on the document original, and allows an inspector of a digital document reproduction to quickly identify it as an authentic digital reproduction of the document original by virtue of the presence and exactness of the validation message. The second security feature is at least partially embedded, and can be completely embedded, within the first security feature.
