  • Publication number: 20060274195
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for composing a video layout having an aspect ratio of 16:9 from a plurality of video segments having an aspect ratio other than 16:9. For example, the plurality of video segments might have an aspect ratio of 4:3. To create a composite frame having an aspect ratio of about 16:9, the disclosed system scales each one of the segments and places each scaled segment in the layout in such a way that the composite layout has an aspect ratio of about 16:9.

  • Patent number: 7139015
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for mixing compressed video useable in a videoconferencing environment having a plurality of endpoint users. Through the use of the method and apparatus, each endpoint can receive a unique layout displaying some subset of the users at the endpoints. Input streams from each endpoint are uncompressed, resized, and scaled to fit the segment in the layout for particular endpoints, and then encoded (or compressed) by a sub-encoder into a sub-encoded stream according to the compression parameters. Each sub-encoded streams is further encoded and associated with a position in the layout. Different layouts may be sent to different conferees, and different compression standards may be used for each endpoint.

  • Patent number: 7113200
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for preparing video conference images. An endpoint has a wide screen display. The disclosed system creates an image with an aspect ratio of about 16:9 for the endpoint. The image is altered or modified to change the aspect ratio to about 4:3. In one example, two portions can be added to the image to increase the overall height of the image. The wide screen display is set to a zoom mode and is capable of substantially displaying the image without the added portions. Alternatively, the image is stretched along its height by a factor of 4/3. The wide screen display is set to the wide mode and is capable of substantially displaying the image without the stretched height. The disclosed system and method can receive signals that the endpoint has a wide screen display and can also inform a user at the endpoint to set the wide screen display to the wide or zoom modes.

  • Publication number: 20060164508
Abstract: An association of videoconferencing services is disclosed that enables two or more videoconferences to be generated with each videoconference running independently from the others and having its own conferees. The association is achieved by having at least one conferee (a traveler) that can “move” or “travel” from one videoconference to another in the association. The one or more travelers belong to the association and not to any particular videoconference. In exemplary embodiments, the traveler can choose between the various associated videoconferences by making a selection to a multipoint control unit (MCU) that controls the associated videoconferences.

  • Publication number: 20060164507
Abstract: New videoconferencing services and methods for handling the video and audio of one or more sub-conferences running in parallel to a main videoconference are disclosed. In exemplary embodiment, a multipoint control unit (MCU) that controls one or more videoconferences may be requested by a conferee of a videoconference (a main videoconference) to establish a sub-conference according to a requester mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 6757005
Abstract: An improved method and a system of utilizing the decoding/encoding video resources of a Video Processing Device (VPD) by offering a distributed architecture. A conventional VPD comprises a plurality of video ports, each video port is dedicated to a user and comprises at least one decoder and one encoder. The distributed VPD comprises a plurality of input ports and a plurality of output ports. Each input port includes an input module. The input module is operative to receive a compressed video input stream, manipulate the compressed video stream into a primary stream and optionally generate a secondary data stream associated with the primary data stream. A variety of levels of service for a session can be offered. A client may select the number of ports that will be used by the session. For example, a single port may multicast its compressed output video stream to all the destinations within a session, or to all destinations within a plurality of ports.

  • Publication number: 20040042553
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for reducing delay in video communication, including, for example, video transcoding and continuous presence in a multipoint multimedia conference. The video communication control unit reduces such delay by processing a video stream in a small number of macroblocks referred to as “chunks,” without waiting to get a full frame of video data. Instead, the incoming video stream is converted into decoded chunks. These decoded chunks are transferred to an output module without waiting to decode an entire frame. An encoder in the output module encodes the decoded chunks (also referred to as encoder chunks), and transfers them to an end user without waiting for the entire frame to be processed. Thus, reducing the delay in waiting for the entire frame of video data provides improved real-time video communication.

  • Publication number: 20030174202
Abstract: In an embodiment, a videoconference system is provided in which a conference can be controlled by an end user (e.g., a participant of the conference) without the assistance of an operator. In another embodiment, the end user is presented with a graphical feature on an image associated with an ongoing conference that links to a menu, which in turn links to routines for selecting various options that change the setup of the conference. In yet another embodiment, the parameters of the conference can be changed while the conference is ongoing. In a further embodiment, the conference control unit includes a menu generator. Any combination of the above embodiments can be used together in one embodiment.

  • Patent number: 6300973
Abstract: A multipoint control unit (MCU) for facilitating communication between a plurality of endpoints. Each endpoint sends a compressed video signal and receives a compressed video signal. The MCU has a plurality of video input modules and a video output module. Each of the video input modules receives a video signal from one of the endpoints and generally decodes the data into a primary data stream and a secondary data stream. The video output module includes a rate control unit and a generalized encoder that receive the primary and secondary data streams for generally encoding to a compressed output stream for transmission to an endpoint.
