Publication number: 20100299922Abstract: A method for producing a piston for an internal combustion engine, designed as a cooling duct piston for small compression heights. The piston includes a lower part and an upper part which are supported by one or more corresponding joining planes and are connected of a friction welding process. The piston encloses an inner, trough-shaped cooling duct and an outer cooling duct which is axially spaced apart from an annual area. The inner cooling duct is formed in the lower part of the piston by a mechanical machining process, such as a forging process. Transfer openings which are assigned to the cooling ducts are formed before the frictional welding of the joining planes.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 18, 2006Publication date: December 2, 2010Applicant: KS KOLBENSCHMIDT GMBHInventors: Volker Gniesmer, Norbert Nies

Patent number: 7553145Abstract: A powder press for compacting a compressible mass into a rigid and dimensionally accurate body has a base, a first sleeve part in the base and having an inner surface, and a second sleeve part movable in a predetermined direction on the base adjacent the first die part between an inner position and an outer position. The second part has an inner surface forming in the inner position with the first-part inner surface a cavity open outwardly in the direction. A piston shiftable in the direction in the cavity can compact the mass therein. An actuator can shift the second part in the direction relative to the first part between the inner and outer positions.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2006Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: SMS Meer GmbHInventors: Norbert Nies, Walter Solty, Bernd Horn

Patent number: 5906837Abstract: A device for producing pressed articles with a main cylindrically-shaped elements and secondary helically-shaped element from powdered material, especially powdered metal, with a female mold and with at least one top punch, which is supported so as to be rotatable about its longitudinal axis, and at least one bottom punch, which is supported so as to be rotatable about its longitudinal axis. The top and bottom punches are movable axially relative to the female mold by means of motor drives and the top punch, of which there is at least one, is driven in rotation about its longitudinal axis to achieve a helical movement in addition to its axial drive the bottom punch, of which there is at least one, is also driven in rotation. Rotary motor drives of the punches are mechanically uncoupled from the drives for the axial movement of the punches and may be regulated separately by an electronic control.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1997Date of Patent: May 25, 1999Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Rainer Link, Klaus Vossen, Matthias Holthausen, Norbert Nies

Patent number: 5043111Abstract: A plurality of rams in a pressing machine are movable into and out of a predetermined position to compress power material and shape a die-formed part. The rams are advanced to a pre-selected spaced relationship to form a desired configuration of the die-formed part. Strain gauges are mounted on each ram to detect during the pressing operation elastic deformation, altering the dimension of the ram and the shape of the die-formed part. In response to detected elastic deformation, the strain gauges transmit a signal through a controller to a readout device for recording the magnitude of ram deformation. Thereafter, the press drive mechanism is actuated to move the rams to compensate for the change in dimension of the rams so that the rams are repositioned to maintain the desired spaced relationship for a predetermined configuration of the die-formed part.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1990Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Gerd Hinzmann, Norbert Nies, Siegfried Radewahn

Patent number: 5024811Abstract: Precision compacts are produced from powdered material in a mold having at least one top plug and at least one bottom plug between which plugs the powdered material is compressed. The course of the pressing force of at least one of the plugs is detected as a function of the path of its travel during compression, and compared with a predetermined path-dependent tolerance range of the pressing force. Upon exceeding such tolerance range, the final pressing position of the plug in question is changed in such a manner that the height of the compact in such final pressing position is reduced by an amount corresponding to the increased springing back of the compact upon its removal from the mold that results from the greater final pressing force.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1990Date of Patent: June 18, 1991Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesllschaftInventors: Gerd Hinzmann, Norbert Nies, Siegfried Radewahn
