Abstract: A drive arrangement for an electrically power assisted bicycle, wherein the electrical power assist components are comprised of an electric motor and transmission as one unit and a battery as another unit, with the electric motor and transmission being disposed on one side of and relatively low relative to a manual crank axis and the battery case is disposed on the rear side of the crank axis to improve fore and aft balance while maintaining a low center of gravity.

Abstract: A power assisted manually operated vehicle wherein the power assist is capable of providing different power and speed curves depending upon the operating condition. The operator may also select one of these conditions for manual operation such as to obtain an assist when pushing the vehicle. The variable speed and power curves are obtained with a permanent magnet electric motor with the variations being obtained by varying the field strength of the permanent magnet through an augmenting coil.

Abstract: An electrically power assisted vehicle such as a bicycle and specifically a rechargeable battery holding arrangement for such vehicles. The vehicle is provided with a battery box that defines an internal opening for receiving a battery carrier and at least one battery carried thereby. A lid of the battery box carries a spring biased member engageable with the battery carrier for holding the battery carrier in the battery box when the lid is closed. Terminals are provided on the battery carrier and the battery box with the later terminal being disposed in the cavity so that the electrical connection to the vehicle is protected whether or not the battery carrier is in place.

Abstract: A pedal operated vehicle such as a bicycle having an electric motor assist. The assist ratio provided by the electric motor may be varied in response to a variety of vehicle conditions such as speed so as to reduce the consumption of electrical energy and to avoid over speed conditions. Various control ratio options are depicted and an embodiment is also shown wherein the operator may select the assist ratio or assist ratio curve provided.

The device includes an arrangement for maintaining the speed of the electric motor at the same speed as the bicycle even when no force is applied to the pedal even though the bicycle is in motion so as to reduce the time delay and power losses when power assist is required.

Abstract: Several embodiments of pedal operated vehicles such as bicycles wherein electric motor assist is provided in response to the pedaling force applied by the rider. However, a number of embodiments of malfunction detection devices are disclosed and which will preclude the application of electric motor assist if the system has been disabled or if it is not operating properly. In addition, a start up routine is also disclosed that prevents the sudden application of electric power upon starting of the system.

Abstract: Several embodiments of electric power assisted bicycles wherein an electrical motor is employed for assisting in the pedaling of the bicycle. The embodiments all include an arrangement for changing the state of the electrical power in response to pushing of the bicycle. In some embodiments, the circuit for the electric motor is opened when the bicycle is pushed rearwardly so as to avoid undue resistance to the pushing as might occur due to the fact that the motor would operate as a generator under this condition and provide an electrical load. In other embodiments, the electric motor is energized upon pushing so as to assist in pushing the bicycle.
