  • Publication number: 20090068332
Abstract: A seed shucking appliance for separating seed coverings from their kernels comprises a vertical cylinder within which is rotated an upward pointing and rotating cone. The top surfaces of the cone and the inside surfaces of the cylinder are roughened to catch and grate the skins or hulls off water-softened beans or grains poured in from above. The clearances and textures between the roughened cone and inside cylinder are such that most of the skins or shells stay above the cone after being knocked loose, and the bared seed kernels drop down through without necessarily being ground up or smashed. What drops through is sent to a water bath where any remaining skins or shells are floated away. The bared seed kernels are drained and ready to be used as whole seed kernels in various kinds of foods.

  • Patent number: 5438919
Abstract: A device for separating the yolk and albumen of an egg is provided. A housing includes an inner chamber and an outer chamber. A lid member is detachably coupled to an upper edge of the housing. The lid includes an annular member positioned above the inner chamber and a plurality of slots disposed adjacent to the annular member communicating with the outer chamber. The annular member is sized for retaining the yolk and for causing the albumen to overflow the annular member with the slots allowing the albumen to flow downwardly into the outer chamber. A lever is pivotally coupled to the annular member. The lever has a bottom portion abutting a bottom edge of the annular member for enabling dispensing of whole yolk retained in the annular member into the inner chamber without breaking the yolk. A funnel is detachably mounted on the lid. The funnel has a bottom opening positioned above the annular member for directing the egg to the annular member.

  • Patent number: 5273529
Abstract: A gastrostomy tube including a tube with a plurality of flexible legs, each leg having an end joined to an exit end of the tube and another end joined to other ends of the legs to form an expandable Malecot tip. A cord is slideably positioned in each tube with one cord end secured to the joined ends of the legs and another end threaded through the respective leg, through the tube and into a housing located on the entrance end of the tube where it is secured to a capstan. The capstan is secured in a housing attached to the entrance end of the tube. When the capstan is turned, the cords are wrapped around the capstan and pull on the joined ends of the legs so as to cause the legs to buckle and expand laterally, thereby securing the gastrostomy tube in the wall of the abdomen. A one-way valve is located in the tube which permits nutrients to pass from the entrance end, through the tube, and into the stomach but will prevent flow of contents of the stomach in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 5069119
Abstract: A device for separating the yolk and albumen of eggs, after removal from the shell, includes a cup-shaped member in an upper portion of a unitary housing for receiving an egg, retaining the yolk and allowing the albumen to overflow the cup-shaped member through surrounding slots into a first chamber in the housing, a lever being operable thereafter to break the yolk and form an opening in the cup-shaped member for allowing the yoke to flow through a tube extending downwardly through the first chamber into a second chamber. The chambers each have inclined floors and chutes for allowing their respective contents to flow into separate containers. A funnel is preferably mounted above the cup-shaped member together with an anvil so that the shell of the egg can be broken on the anvil and the combined yolk and albumen directed into the cup-shaped member by the funnel.
