  • Patent number: 5073682
Abstract: A cable for use as aerial service wire having a core of conductors and a load carrier in the form of a plurality of spaced apart tensile reinforcing members spaced from the core as a group laterally on one side of the core. Part of the jacket surrounds the core and is interconnected to another jacket part surrounding the group of filaments. The jacket part surrounding the filament group has a width greater than its thickness so that it may fit within a wedge clamp for stringing purposes. The two parts of the jacket are capable of being separated between the filament group and the core to allow a wedge clamp to be fitted. For this purpose, the cable may be fitted with a non-adherent tape inside the jacket and between the jacket parts with the jacket parts interconnecting around edges of the tape.

  • Patent number: 4710594
Abstract: A telecommunications cable having no metal sheath, but having a plurality of equally pre-tensioned and inextensible tensile members embedded in the cable jacket. These members are spaced apart around the core and extend longitudinally of the cable to apply an axially compressive force upon the jacket. The members may be glass fibers and each member is preferably a roving of fibers. The filaments may be coated with a material which sticks them to the jacket and the core may be filled with a moisture blocking material.

  • Patent number: 4659424
Abstract: In the making of cable with spaced conductor wires or tensile members in a non-circular jacket, the wires of member are maintained in desired angular positions within the jacket by guiding them through a core tube which is controllably rotatable within the extruder cross-head. The angular positions of the wires or members are monitored and upon their positions departing from the desired positions, the core tube is rotated in the appropriate direction to return them to the desired positions.

  • Patent number: 4545858
Abstract: A method and apparatus to apply pulp to a telecommunications conductor with an adhesive which is formed from acrylic resin solution. The solution is applied in a bath and is passed between wiping rolls with the feed speed of the conductor and the differential speed between the peripheral surfaces of the wiping rolls and the conductor being controlled together with the contact angle between the conductor and the rolls. This control results in a dried thickness of resin of no greater than 0.00015 inches and as little as 20 microns after further stages in the method. These steps include drying the solution in a solution drying oven, coating the adhesive with pulp and drying the pulp coated conductor.

  • Patent number: 4429519
Abstract: Cable core unit forming apparatus having a plurality of wire guide means, each for stranding wires together. The guide means are laterally spaced and each extends along a longitudinal axis to be non-rotatable about the axis at its upstream end. It is rotationally flexible to be torsionally twisted by rotatable twisting means at its downstream end. Each guide means are disposed at one of two or more twisting stations. Feedpaths for wires from other twisting stations converge to a stranding station for the core unit. Wire separation tubes prevent the wires from stranding into pairs until immediately before the stranding station. Each separation tube is rotated about its axis which is maintained curved to follow one of the converging paths and the tube is flexible to enable its curved axis position to be maintained during rotation.
