  • Patent number: 9632197
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an electromagnetic (EM) field from a sub-sea source is disclosed. In one embodiment, a sub-sea source includes a step-down transformer coupled to receive a sinusoidal source wave via a tow cable, and is further coupled to output a sinusoidal wave to a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) circuit. A control circuit coupled to the SCR circuit is configured to selectively activate various ones of the SCRs therein in order to control a portion of the sinusoidal wave that is rectified. The output current provided by the SCR is determined by the portion of the sinusoidal wave that is rectified thereby. The output current is provided to electrodes coupled to the sub-sea source, and the output current is passed therebetween. The strength of the EM field is based on the output current.

  • Patent number: 9217806
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for towing one or more electromagnetic sensor streamers from deflectors in an additional geophysical sensor streamer spread. An embodiment discloses a marine geophysical survey system, comprising: a survey vessel; an electromagnetic sensor streamer; and a geophysical sensor streamer spread configured to be towed by the survey vessel, wherein the geophysical sensor streamer spread comprises: sensor streamers configured to be laterally spaced apart from one another; and deflectors adapted to spread the sensor streamers substantially transversely in relation to a direction of motion of the survey vessel, wherein the electromagnetic sensor streamer is configured to be towed from at least one of the deflectors.

  • Patent number: 9081106
Abstract: A marine electromagnetic survey source includes a power cable configured to couple to a high voltage power supply at one axial end and to a head unit at the other axial end. The head unit includes equipment configured to output a lower voltage at higher current than the current imparted thereto by high voltage power supply. The head unit has an electrically conductive exterior coupled to one output terminal of the equipment. An electromagnetic antenna cable having an electrode thereon is coupled to the head unit and configured to receive the output of another terminal of the head unit equipment. In some implementations, electromagnetic fields are induced in formations by conducting current to the equipment. Marine geophysical surveys are conducted utilizing such induction of electromagnetic fields.

  • Patent number: 8797038
Abstract: A marine electromagnetic survey system includes a power cable configured to couple to a power supply at one axial end, and to a head unit at the other end. The power supply includes a source of direct current which is coupled to the power cable. The head unit includes equipment configured to output a lower voltage at a higher current than the source of direct current. At least one electromagnetic antenna is coupled to the head unit and is configured to receive the output of the head unit equipment.
