Publication number: 20170098247Abstract: Various technologies described herein pertain to prefetching content units. A prefetch request is transmitted to a server from a client device. The prefetch request includes data indicative of probabilities of slots for content units being available during an upcoming time period. The probabilities can be based on likely interaction with application(s) executed by the client device during the upcoming time period. Prefetched content units assigned to the client device for the upcoming time period can be received from the server responsive to the prefetch request. One or more of the prefetched content units can be served for display on a display screen of the client device during execution the application(s). Further, statuses of the prefetched content units can be monitored, and information that specifies a subset of the prefetched content units that are unlikely to be displayed on the display screen prior to corresponding deadlines for expiration can be transmitted.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2016Publication date: April 6, 2017Inventors: Suman Kumar Nath, Oriana Riva, Douglas Christopher Burger, Prashanth Mohan

Patent number: 9558508Abstract: Various technologies described herein pertain to prefetching advertisements for mobile advertising. A prediction model for estimating a number of advertisements that a mobile client is likely to request during an upcoming prediction time period can be employed. An estimated total amount of time of likely interaction with application(s) executed by the mobile client can be predicted; based upon such prediction, a number of advertisement slots likely to be available and a probability of each of the advertisement slots being available can be computed. Moreover, an ad server can allocate advertisements in a pending advertisement queue and/or disparate advertisements collected from an ad exchange to the mobile client based upon the number of advertisement slots likely to be available, the probability of each of the advertisements slots being available, and aggregated probabilities of the pending advertisements in the pending advertisement queue being displayed prior to corresponding deadlines for expiration.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2013Date of Patent: January 31, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Suman Kumar Nath, Oriana Riva, Douglas Christopher Burger, Prashanth Mohan

Publication number: 20160092699Abstract: The privacy-preserving cookie generator implementations described herein create a privacy-preserving data structure (also called a privacy-preserving cookie herein) that is used to provide personalization for online services without user tracking. In some implementations the privacy-preserving cookie generator encodes a user profile (for example, based on a user's online activity) into a data structure that has naturally occurring noise and that efficiently supports noise addition. In one implementation a Bloom filter is used to create the encoded profile. Additional noise is injected into the encoded profile to create an obfuscated user profile in the form of a privacy-preserving data structure. The privacy-preserving data structure or cookie can be attached to an online service request and sent over a network to an online service provider which can use it fulfill the services request, providing a somewhat personalized result while the user's privacy is maintained.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2014Publication date: March 31, 2016Inventors: Oriana Riva, Suman Nath, Douglas Christopher Burger, Nitesh Mor

Patent number: 8839358Abstract: Progressive authentication is generally employed to establish the authenticity of a user, such as a user of a computing device, or a user that wants to access a proprietary data item, software application or on-line service. This can entail inputting authentication factors each of which corresponds to one or multiple attributes associated with the user, or historical patterns of one or more attributes associated with the user, or both, and a confidence level that estimates a reliability of the factor. Sensor readings captured by one or more sensors are also input. Each sensor senses a user attribute and are used to quantify each authentication factor confidence level. An overall confidence level is established based at least in part on a combination of the individual confidence levels. A user is then designated as being authentic whenever the established overall confidence level exceeds a prescribed authentication level.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2011Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Karin Strauss, Oriana Riva, Douglas Burger, Jaron Lanier
