  • Patent number: 4596164
Abstract: In an air-fuel ratio control method for electronically controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture being supplied to an internal combustion engine for a vehicle in response to operating conditions of the engine, a predetermined value of a parameter indicative of loads on the engine is set which corresponds at least to a detected value of a parameter indicative of the gear position of the transmission of the vehicle, and when a detected value of the engine load parameter is smaller than the set predetermined value, leaning of the mixture is effected. As the detected value of the above gear position parameter indicates a lower speed gear position, the above predetermined value of the above engine load parameter is set to a smaller value. Preferably, the predetermined value of the engine load parameter is set to a value also correponding to a detected value of engine temperature and/or a detected value of engine speed, in addition to a detected value of the gear position parameter.

  • Patent number: 4526153
Abstract: A method for electronically controlling the air/fuel ratio of a mixture being supplied to an internal combustion engine for use in a vehicle, in response to operating conditions of the engine. A plurality of different operating regions of the engine are set beforehand, which are each defined by predetermined values of first and second parameters indicative of operating conditions of the engine. Detection is made of values of the above first and second parameters and the speed of the vehicle. At least one mixture-leaning operating region is selected from the above different predetermined operating regions, in dependence on a detected value of the vehicle speed. When it is determined from detected values of the first and second parameters that the engine is operating in the at least one mixture-leaning operating region selected, leaning of the mixture being supplied to the engine is effected.

  • Patent number: 4454854
Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation control method for controlling the recirculation of exhaust gases through an exhaust gas recirculating passageway communicating an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine for vehicles and an intake passage of same, in response to operating conditions of the engine. The range of the exhaust gas recirculation effecting region of the engine, which is determined by the engine rotational speed and another engine operation parameter indicative of intake air quantity, is varied in response to changes in the vehicle speed.

  • Patent number: 4438627
Abstract: An exhaust gas purification apparatus is provided for an internal combustion engine which comprises an intake passage means, an exhaust passage means, a catalyzer for exhaust gas purification which is coupled to an exhaust passage, and an external air introducing passage for introducing external air. The external air introducing passage is coupled to the exhaust passage on the upstream side of the catalyzer. A control valve is positioned in the external air introducing passage and a detecting device is coupled to said control valve for detecting a deceleration of the engine and for opening the control valve in response thereto. External air flows through the external air introducing passage and the control valve into the catalyzer for cooling said catalyzer.

  • Patent number: 4429676
Abstract: An internal combustion engine for a vehicle has an exhaust gas recirculation system for returning exhaust gases to the engine intake passage. The carburetion system for the engine includes a fuel enrichment valve. A control suction air line from the intake passage operates a regulating valve which controls the exhaust gas recirculation valve as well as the fuel enrichment valve. The flow resistance through the control suction air line is controlled by a prescribed control factor, which factor may depend upon the engine temperature alone or supplemented by engine speed, engine load (suction pressure), or atmospheric pressure.

  • Patent number: 4349006
Abstract: An internal combustion engine for a vehicle has an exhaust gas recirculating system for returning exhaust gases to the engine intake passage. The carburetion system for the engine includes a fuel enrichment valve. Sensors for various vehicle speeds and engine operating conditions operate control valves whose actions are modified by a sensor for atmospheric pressure, to control the fuel enrichment valve and a valve in the recirculation passage so that fuel enrichment and exhaust gas recirculation are both reduced when the vehicle travels at a high elevation having low atmospheric pressure.

  • Patent number: 4349005
Abstract: An internal combustion engine for a vehicle has an exhaust gas recirculation system for returning exhaust gases to the engine intake passage. The carburetion system for the engine includes a fuel enrichment valve. Sensors for high vehicle speed and low vehicle speed control the fuel enrichment valve and a valve in the recirculation passage so that the fuel enrichment valve and the exhaust gas recirculation valve are controlled in a manner so that exhaust gas recirculation and fuel enrichment are increased in a lower vehicle speed range, and decreased in a higher vehicle speed range.

  • Patent number: 4336784
Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation control system employs a flow rate valve in the recirculation line. The valve is operated by suction pressure obtained from two suction ports in the engine intake passage. Suction lines from those ports contain air inlet valves which dilute the suction pressure with atmospheric air, depending upon engine operating conditions. A fuel supply increasing valve is connected to a venturi in the engine intake passage and suction operated control means control operation of that valve. The result is an improved acceleration characteristic for the engine under load without substantial increase in discharge of pollutants into the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4325348
Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine employs a first control valve in an exhaust gas introduction passageway, a second control valve in an air conduit connecting the engine intake passage to atmosphere, and a regulating valve responsive to differential vacuum intensities for operating vacuum-responsive actuators for the control valves. A recirculation stop valve vents to atmosphere the actuator for the second control valve in response to an engine operating condition, to stop recirculation of exhaust gas.
