Patent number: 6603773Abstract: A data transmission system comprises a first device and a second device and a duplex data transmission connection therebetween. The first device sends to the second device user data on a data channel and control information on a control channel. The transmission is arranged in frames that comprise a user data field corresponding to a data channel and at least a first and a second control information field corresponding together to a control channel. In order to realise the control of the transmission power, there is determined a first transmission power level, a second transmission power level and a third transmission power level. From the second device to the first device there is transmitted a frame by applying said first transmission power level to the transmission of the user data field, said second transmission power level to the transmission of the first control information field and said third transmission power level to the transmission of the second control information field.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1999Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones LimitedInventors: Janne Laakso, Oscar Salonaho

Patent number: 6594495Abstract: The invention relates to a method for load control and a radio system. In the invention a load result describing the load is cell-specifically formed. The load result is formed either by comparing a signal strength of desired signals and a combined total strength of interferences and the desired signals or by weighting a signal-to-interference ratio with a bandwidth or a data transmission rate. The load result is compared with a threshold value of the highest load level allowed of a cell. The data transmission rate in the cell is increased if the load result is smaller than the threshold value. The data transmission rate in the cell is reduced and the establishment of new connections is avoided if the load result exceeds the threshold value. In heavy load situations a signal-to-interference objective is also changed in order to balance the load result.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Oscar Salonaho, Hannu Häkkinen, Seppo Granlund

Patent number: 6574485Abstract: The invention concerns a method of power regulation in a radio system including at least two transmitters, e.g. base transceiver stations, transmitting at the same frequency and receivers, e.g. mobile stations, which have set up a radio communication with the former. In the method according to the invention, the results of measurements of co-channel adjacent transmitter signals are used, besides the results of measurements of the radio communication to be relayed, in making the power regulation decision. From the results of measurements of adjacent transmitter signals to be transmitted with the monitored radio communication at the same frequency and in the same time slot, an estimate is determined of that interference caused to the radio communication, which is to be compensated for by a regulation of the transmission power of the desired signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2000Date of Patent: June 3, 2003Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Oscar Salonaho, Oscar Lappeteläinen

Publication number: 20020186710Abstract: The idea of the invention is the allocation of transmission resources in several separate steps. In the first step, the available transmission resources are dynamically divided between the different networks. In the second step, the networks divide the resources that have been allocated for their use among their users by their own channel allocation methods. In one embodiment, a given minimum capacity wherewith the network achieves a predetermined minimum quality of service is permanently allocated to some or all of the networks. As the capacity requirement increases, the necessary amount of additional capacity is allocated to the operator in excess of this minimum capacity. The additional capacity is then allocated either from resources separately reserved for this purpose that are common to the networks, or by borrowing it from capacity that is allocated to another network but falls outside the minimum capacity of said network.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2000Publication date: December 12, 2002Inventors: Antero Alvesalo, Mika Rinne, Hannu Hakkinen, Oscar Salonaho

Patent number: 6456605Abstract: The discussion concerns the mutual arrangement of packets to be transmitted in a radio system, where the transmitted data is formed into packets (204, 205, 206) for the transmission. The system comprises at least two transmitting devices which transmit substantially simultaneously and substantially on the same frequency, whereby the carrier power transmitted by the first transmitting device is interference power to those receiving devices, to which the second device transmits carrier power, and vice versa. In order to arrange the packets there is generated a utility function with a value, which depends on the carrier power and the interference power and which can be obtained by calculation for the transmitted packets in their mutual transmitting order at that moment. The packets to be transmitted are arranged in a mutual transmission order corresponding to the extreme value of the utility function.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1998Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd.Inventors: Janne Laakso, Tatu Koljonen, Mika Rinne, Oscar Salonaho

Patent number: 6317418Abstract: The invention relates to a method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system using an ARQ protocol. In the method the receiver requests, if necessary, retrasnmissions of the originally sent transmission unit, until the quality of the combined transmission unit formed of the originally sent transmission unit and its retransmitted copies corresponds to the predetermined quality level. The signal is not detected until after this. If the packet is interleaved and encoded and it is found out that the packet is not faultless, retransmissions of the transmission units of the packet that are of the poorer quality are requested. The invention also relates to a mobile communications system implementing the method of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1998Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones LimitedInventors: Mika Raitola, Hannu Häkkinen, Mikko J.
