  • Patent number: 4998333
Abstract: A roll (1) for the press of a paper machine or the like, comprising a substantially rigid cylindrical shell body (2); a resilient layer (3) made of a resilient material such as rubber and positioned on the shell body; and a surface layer (4) positioned on the resilient layer. The resilient layer (3) is formed by fastening profiles (9) made of soft and resilient rubber to the surface of the shell body (2) in such a manner that substantially equally wide conduits (10) are defined between the profiles (9). The surface layer (4), in turn, is fastened to the profiles (9) on to the surface facing away from the shell body (2). In order to cool the resilient layer (3) of the roll (1), water is introduced into the conduits (10) between the profiles (9) through one connection conduit (8).

  • Patent number: 4856159
Abstract: Spreader roll for a fabric in a paper machine, the spreader roll being supported at the middle of thereof and comprising an inner tube and an outer tube attached onto the inner tube through an intermediate part. The inner tube and the outer tube are substantially coaxial with one another when the roll is in an unbent state. Annular intermediate spaces are situated between the tubular parts at both sides of the intermediate part, the intermediate spaces being dimensioned so they permit deflection of the inner tube and the outer tube relative to one another when the fabric passing over the roll is being tensioned. Ends or end flanges are situated at the outer end of the inner tube, along with axle journals. The double mantle of the roll with the intermediate part thereof is composed of a piece of reinforced plastic made as a substantially single, unified piece, in which the outer tube and the inner tube are integrally connected through the intermediate portion, without joints.

  • Patent number: 4559106
Abstract: A press roll in a paper making machine comprises a non-perforated inner frame onto which an elastic layered structure is applied, the layered structure including an inner layer having a volume of which a substantial portion is constituted by cavities and an outer layer adapted to act against the inner surface of a looped press felt which passes through the press nip, the outer layer having passages formed therethrough which communicate with the cavities of the inner layer. During operation, the cavities are compressed together and thereby widen or extend the nip zone and, additionally, the cavities act as suction devices to produce a negative pressure in the nip zone following the centerline thereof. A press is disclosed which is formed by the press roll described above and a counter-roll which is provided with an elastic coating and a hollow face. A pair of press felts pass through the nip zone formed by these rolls between which the web to be dewatered is passed.
