Patent number: 8447293Abstract: Methods and apparatus to monitor communication system transceivers are disclosed. For example, the disclosed system may determine the number and locations of available cellular stations. An example method includes receiving a first message from a base station, receiving a second message from the base station, extracting a first parameter from the first message, extracting a second parameter different from first parameter from the second message, determining if the first message and the second message were received from the same base station based on the first parameter and the second parameter, and reporting that the first message and the second message were from the same base station if the first message and the second message were received from the same base station. Some implementations of the disclosed methods and apparatus enable pseudorandom number codes received over-the-air from base stations to be grouped by base station.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2008Date of Patent: May 21, 2013Assignee: The Nielsen Company (US), LLCInventors: Padraig Stapleton, Hing On Ngai, Benjamin Ip

Patent number: 8014726Abstract: A method of collecting information on a wireless device. A wireless device may comprise a processor, a transceiver, a memory and a data collecting component. The data collecting component is operable to monitor the wireless device and collect information (e.g., wireless network information, wireless device information and wireless device usage information). In one embodiment, at least a portion of the data collecting component is installed within and/or below the operating system. For example, at least a portion of the data collecting component may be embedded within the operating system, the kernel, the firmware and/or on top of the firmware, the kernel or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the collected information may be processed, stored and transmitted. Accordingly, the data collector component operates in a non-intrusive/transparent manner by utilizing less memory space and produces fewer errors without causing a system slowdown while maintaining high level of privacy and security.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2007Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: The Nielsen Company (U.S.), LLCInventors: David Petersen, Padraig Stapleton

Publication number: 20080299910Abstract: A method of measuring wireless cross technology wireless coverage. The method includes initiating a call from a wireless device using a given wireless technology; in response to the initiating, receiving a plurality of data for the given wireless technology; in response to the receiving, analyzing the plurality of data; repeating the above steps for various wireless technologies; and generating a calibration for the analysis of the plurality of data for various wireless technologies. The adjusted data in response to the generated calibration is constructed and outputted. In one embodiment, the analysis includes determining the signal strength for the wireless device of the given wireless technology and determining the probability of call failure for the wireless device of the given wireless technology. Accordingly, at a given probability of call failure, signal strengths of the wireless device for various wireless technologies are corresponded and are equivalent to one another.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 30, 2007Publication date: December 4, 2008Applicant: TELEPHIA INCORPORATIONInventors: David Petersen, Padraig Stapleton

Publication number: 20080248795Abstract: A method of classifying a call failure. In one embodiment, an indication of a call failure is received and the cause of the failed call is automatically identified and classified. In one embodiment, identifying the cause of a call failure comprises determining signal characteristics, determining network resource availability, and determining cellular structure characteristics. In one embodiment, a call failure is classified as coverage failure if the signal strength is below an acceptable threshold or if a wireless device initiates a call and receives no response from the network or when the signal interference is above an acceptable threshold. In one embodiment, a call failure is classified as capacity failure if a network is unable to accommodate a wireless device with a communication channel or resources. A call failure is classified as operational failure if the call failure is related to mistakes in a configuration file defining and identifying cellular structures.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 9, 2007Publication date: October 9, 2008Applicant: TELEPHIA INCORPORATIONInventors: David Petersen, Padraig Stapleton, Kevin Hannan
