Patent number: 10466404Abstract: A primary optic for a light-emitting diode or device (LED) includes a tilted wedge atop a truncated compound parabolic concentrator (CPC). The CPC includes an input face and a lower exterior surface defined by a tilted parabolic segment rotated about an axis. The bottom end of the lower exterior surface joins the perimeter of the input face. The tilted wedge includes an upper exterior surface above the lower exterior surface, and an interior conical surface surrounded by the lower and the upper exterior surfaces. The upper exterior surface is defined by a tilted straight line rotated about the axis. The interior conical surface is defined by a smooth curve rotated about the axis. The interior conical surface has a vertex located at the axis and within the lower exterior surface. The top ends of the interior conical surface and the upper exterior surface join to define an output aperture.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2017Date of Patent: November 5, 2019Assignee: LUMILEDS LLCInventors: Pascal Bloemen, Maarten van-Lierop, Rick Nijkamp, Mark Steltenpool, Hugo Cornelissen

Publication number: 20170256690Abstract: There is proposed a light source comprising: a semiconductor diode structure adapted to generate light; and an optical enhancement section above the semiconductor diode structure and adapted to output light from the semiconductor diode structure. A partially-reflective layer covers at least a portion of the top of the optical enhancement section and is adapted to reflect a portion of the output light towards the optical enhancement section. The partially-reflective layer has a light transmittance characteristic that varies laterally.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 26, 2015Publication date: September 7, 2017Applicant: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS N.V.Inventors: Floris Maria Hermansz Crompvoets, Benno Spinger, Pascal Bloemen, Norbertus Antonius Maria Sweegers, Marc Andre de Samber

Patent number: 9631785Abstract: A lighting unit (1) is provided with a reflecting surface (2, 2?, 2?) for providing an output beam of light with at least two beam patterns. A first light source (5) and a second light source (7) are arranged to illuminate substantially identical surface areas of said reflecting surface (2, 2?, 2?) and are independently controllable from each other. The reflecting surface (2, 2?, 2?) is shaped and said light sources (5, 7) are positioned relative to said reflecting surface (2, 2?, 2?) so that said first light source (5) generates an output beam of light, having a first beam pattern and said at least second light source (7) generates an output beam of light, having a second beam pattern, different from said first beam pattern. A corresponding vehicle headlamp (10) comprises at least one lighting unit (1).Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2009Date of Patent: April 25, 2017Assignee: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS N.V.Inventors: Ludo Haenen, Nils Benter, Pascal Bloemen, Augustinus G. Publication number: 20070091602Abstract: A plurality of light emitting diode dies (LED) with associated secondary optics, which produce different light distribution patterns, are combined to produce an efficient light source having a desired illumination pattern. By way of example, a first LED may include a lens that produces a light distribution pattern with a maximum intensity at the center while a second LED may use a lens that produces a light distribution pattern with a maximum intensity that surrounds the maximum intensity of the pattern produced by the first LED. The light from the LEDs can then be combined to produce a desired illumination pattern. Additional LEDs and lenses, e.g., having different light distribution patterns may be used if desired. Moreover, a variable current driver may be used to vary the amount of current to the different LEDs, such that the combined illumination pattern may be varied as desired.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2005Publication date: April 26, 2007Applicant: Lumileds Lighting U.S., LLCInventors: Pieter van Voorst Vader, Pascal Bloemen, Nicola Pfeffer

Publication number: 20060203302Abstract: The invention relates to an optical scanning device for scanning in a first mode a first information layer (111) of an information carrier and in a second mode a second information layer (112) of the information carrier. The optical scanning device comprises a radiation source (101) for generating a radiation beam (102), an objective system (105) for focussing an entrance beam on an information layer and an optical element (103) arranged between the radiation source and the objective system, for converting said radiation beam into a diverging entrance beam in the first mode and a converging entrance beam in the second mode.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 20, 2004Publication date: September 14, 2006Applicant: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS ELECTRONICS N.V.Inventors: Bernardus Hendrikus Hendriks, Joris Vrehen, Pascal Bloemen, Peter Coops
