  • Patent number: 7507479
Abstract: A coated article comprising a substrate and a copper oxide and manganese oxide coating over the substrate, the coating having the molar ratio of copper to manganese in the range of about 6.8 to 1.2 and a blue color in transmission is disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 2003
Date of Patent: March 24, 2009
    Assignee: PPG Industries Ohio, Inc.

  • Patent number: 6753047
Abstract: Electrodes for liquid crystal cells include a substrate e.g. glass having a conductive and alignment coating e.g. a fluorine doped tin oxide coating. After a conductive coating is deposited on the substrate the surface is cleaned and wiped unidirectionally with a solvent saturated cloth for a predetermined number of times. The electrode prepared in the above manner eliminates the need for the polyimide layer over a conductive coating and heat treatment of the polyimide layer.

  • Patent number: 6649214
Abstract: A copper containing component and a manganese containing component are applied onto the surface of a substrate to form a coating having a selected ratio of copper to manganese to form a desired color. For a brown color, the film molar ratio of copper to manganese is above 1; for an amber color, the molar ratio is below 1, and for a blue color the film molar ratio is about 1. Further, color shifting of a multi-component coating upon subsequent heat treatment is minimized or prevented by determining the most mobile species in the coating and then placing a concentration gradient layer of an oxide of that mobile species between the substrate and the coating.

Upon subsequent heat treatment, the mobile species in the gradient layer diffuses into the substrate more readily than the mobile species in the coating which minimizes depletion of the mobile species from the coating and helps prevent bleaching. Still further, coating films of different selected colors are made by selecting different metal oxide systems.

  • Patent number: 5776236
Abstract: Silicon compounds useful as coating reactants for the chemical vapor deposition of silicon oxide are disclosed, along with compounds useful as accelerants to increase the deposition rate of silicon oxide. The silicon-containing precursor comprises the structural formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl radical which may be substituted, and R.sub.2 is a functional group which increases the reactivity of the silicon compound by withdrawing electron density away from the silicon atom, such as hydrogen, halogen, alkenyl, alkynyl, halogenated alkyl and perhalogenated alkyl radicals. The accelerant is a compound selected to take advantage of the partial positive charge on the silicon atom. Such accelerant compounds include Lewis acids and bases; water; ozone; trivalent compounds of nitrogen, boron and phosphorus; tetravalent compounds of sulfur and selenium; pentavalent compounds of phosphorus and a variety of metal compounds.
