The drop box may include a view port to allow viewing of the opening of the closeable container.     Abstract: A mail tub in the form of a substantially rigid container and a removable lid which seals the container. The container includes an air inlet port and an air outlet port for sampling air in the mail tub for possible biological contamination, such as anthrax. The container includes structure along the bottom and walls to prevent mail from contacting the walls and bottom. Such structure, in one embodiment, may include raised standoffs along the bottom of the container and channels along the walls to facilitate airflow efficiency through the mail tub when the lid is attached and an air pressure source is applied to the one of the ports. Air samples of the sealed container air are collected for contamination analysis.

    Abstract: A diverter for a conveying system which includes a belt conveyor moving along a longitudinal conveying path for transporting flat articles, including a longitudinal conveying path which includes a series of moving belts for moving flat articles therealong. There is a bin for collecting diverted flat articles. A hinged diverter gate is provided above or just forward of the bin for providing a diverting surface of moving belts which, in a first position, allows flat articles to move therealong, and, in a second position, allows the flat articles to move into the bin into which the flat articles are diverted. The bin is located beneath the conveying path and the articles are moved into the bin by the moving belts when the diverter is in its second position. The gate is hinged at a point which is different than the axis of the drive rollers so that the movement of the belts assists the upward movement of the gate when a flat article is to be diverted into the bin below.

    Abstract: A sortation process provides high-speed sorting of randomly ordered articles into a desired order in a plurality of ordered bins or tubs such as standard USPS tubs in two passes, without additionally marking the articles in any way or requiring additional processes to do so. Optical character recognition or bar code reading performed on an image of the article provides a sequence number which is used to place the articles in respective bins or tubs during a first pass. The process then presents the content of the bins or tubs in order for a second pass during which they are placed in final desired order among a final ordered group of bins or tubs. During the first pass, sequence number information can be collected and used for error checking against the order of articles in each bin or tub during a second pass. The final output of the process provides the articles in standard (e.g. USPS) tubs face up and in delivery order.

    Abstract: A printer apparatus has a frame member supporting an endless revolving type band in alignment with a row of print hammers with a gap therebetween. Ribbon spools with ribbon wound thereon are rotatably supported in spool housings at either end and on opposite sides of the frame member. The spool housings each have a receptacle portion and a cover portion which enclose the spool. A gap in the spool houses enables the ribbon to extend between the housing and through the gap. The ink ribbon is guided through the gap in parallel with the row of hammers and at an angle to the print line by a set of guide pins on the cover of one spool housing and a set set of guide pins mounted on the frame member in proximity with the other spool housing. Both sets of guide pins engage the same side of the ink ribbon in a manner whereby touching the ribbon is not required to install or remove the ribbon from the printer apparatus.
