Publication number: 20020189443Abstract: A method is provided for separating methane from carbon dioxide contained in a high pressure gas which comprises expanding the high pressure gas through a flow channel having a convergent section followed by a divergent section with an intervening throat which functions as an aerodynamic expander to obtain a gaseous stream enriched in methane and a heavy stream comprised enriched in carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ethane and heavier components. Generally, the flow channel is operated at temperatures low enough to result in the formation of solid carbon dioxide and solid hydrogen sulfide particles, which increases the efficiency of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide removal.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2001Publication date: December 19, 2002Inventor: Patrick L. Patent number: 5826656Abstract: A method for recovering waterflood residual oil from a waterflooded oil-bearing subterranean formation penetrated from an earth surface by at least one well by injecting an oil miscible solvent into a waterflood residual oil-bearing lower portion of the oil-bearing subterranean formation through a well completed for injection of the oil miscible solvent into the lower portion of the oil-bearing formation; continuing the injection of the oil miscible solvent into the lower portion of the oil-bearing formation for a period of time equal to at least one week; recompleting the well for production of quantities of the oil miscible solvent and quantities of waterflood residual oil from an upper portion of the oil-bearing formation; and producing quantities of the oil miscible solvent and waterflood residual oil from the upper portion of the oil-bearing formation. The formation may have previously been both waterflooded and oil miscible solvent flooded.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1996Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventors: Patrick L. McGuire, Joseph L. Anders

Patent number: 5720350Abstract: A method for recovering oil from a gravity drainage oil-bearing formation from which at least a major portion of the oil in place has been recovered through at least one production well penetrating the formation from the surface, the method comprising injecting an oil miscible solvent having a density slightly greater than a gas contained in a gas cap above the oil liquid level in the formation through a production well completed to inject the oil miscible solvent into an upper portion of the formation for a period of time equal to at least one week; recompleting the well for the production of oil from a lower portion of the formation; and producing oil through the well from the lower portion of the formation.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1996Date of Patent: February 24, 1998Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventor: Patrick L. Patent number: 4424866Abstract: A method of recovering natural gas entrapped in frozen subsurface gas hydrate formations in arctic regions. A hot supersaturated solution of CaCl.sub.2 or CaBr.sub.2, or a mixture thereof, is pumped under pressure down a wellbore and into a subsurface hydrate formation so as to hydrostatically fracture the formation. The CaCl.sub.2 /CaBr.sub.2 solution dissolves the solid hydrates and thereby releases the gas entrapped therein. Additionally, the solution contains a polymeric viscosifier, which operates to maintain in suspension finely divided crystalline CaCl.sub.2 /CaBr.sub.2 that precipitates from the supersaturated solution as it is cooled during injection into the formation.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1981Date of Patent: January 10, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventor: Patrick L.
