  • Patent number: 8396282
Abstract: The present disclosure describes a fused saliency map from visual and auditory saliency maps. The saliency maps are in azimuth and elevation coordinates. The auditory saliency map is based on intensity, frequency and temporal conspicuity maps. Once the auditory saliency map is determined, the map is converted into azimuth and elevation coordinates by processing selected snippets of sound from each of four microphones arranged on a robot head to detect the location of the sound source generating the saliencies.

  • Patent number: 8396249
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling robots based on prioritized targets extracted from fused visual and auditory saliency maps. The fused visual and auditory saliency map may extend beyond the immediate visual range of the robot yet the methods herein allow the robot to maintain an awareness of targets outside the immediate visual range. The fused saliency map may be derived in a bottom-up or top-down approach and may be feature based or object based.

  • Patent number: 8311317
Abstract: The present invention creates and stores target representations in several coordinate representations based on biologically inspired models of the human vision system. By using biologically inspired target representations a computer can be programmed for robot control without using kinematics to relate a target position in camera eyes to a target position in body or head coordinates. The robot sensors and appendages are open loop controlled to focus on the target. In addition, the invention herein teaches a scenario and method to learn the mappings between coordinate representations using existing machine learning techniques such as Locally Weighted Projection Regression.

  • Publication number: 20100223252
Abstract: A method and system for providing personalized search results is disclosed. A computer receives input from a user to navigate to a web site (either directly or as a result of choosing a result from a search result page). The computer navigates to the web site and stores information about the web site in a file. The computer determines web sites associated with a search query of the user as the search query is being entered into a search area of a user interface. The associated web sites are sites that have been previously navigated to by the user. The determining step includes obtaining the web sites associated with the search query from a data structure previously generated from the file. The data structure includes parsed entries of URLs associated with the previously navigated web sites. Based on the determining step, web site links corresponding to the associated web sites are displayed as the search query is being entered.

  • Patent number: 7535143
Abstract: An electromagnetic coupler for a motor vehicle. The coupler includes a first electric machine having an axis and including a first stator bearing a first coil, an input rotor and a first part of an output rotor, and a second electric machine including a second stator bearing a second coil and a second part of the output rotor. The input rotor includes an inner drum spaced apart from the first part of the output rotor and from the first yoke, while the second yoke is spaced apart from the second part of the output rotor by an air gap. The first coil is wound onto the yoke of the first stator around the axis of the first electric machine.

  • Publication number: 20040060808
Abstract: A solar still apparatus is described for the multi-effect distillation of a fluid such as water. A transparent condenser air duct overlies an evaporator air duct having a light-absorbing floor, both sharing a transparent plastic film wall. Air, blown by a fan, flows through the lower duct, where it progressively warms and evaporates a feedstock fluid. At the hot end of the lower duct, the air enters the upper duct where it flows in a reverse direction, progressively cooling and condensing its vapor, a portion of the heat of condensation being transferred through the shared wall to the lower duct. Thermal gradients established within the still facilitate the evaporation and condensation of the fluid with minimal heat loss to the environment and maximal recuperation of the heat of condensation for fluid evaporation. A working fluid may be used to extract useful power from the still's thermal gradients.
