    Abstract: In one embodiment, a nonmetallic, tamper-indicating, multi-layer label with a metallic appearance is described. The label comprises a pearlescent layer, a film layer, a patterned release layer, and a pigmented adhesive layer with the provisos that (i) the pigmented adhesive layer is an exterior layer of the label and is substantially free of pearlescent pigment, and (ii) the patterned release layer is an interior layer of the label. Each layer has first and second opposing planar surfaces, and each layer is in intimate contact with the layer or layers immediately adjacent to it. In another embodiment, two layers, one layer comprising a non-pearlescent pigment and the other layer comprising the adhesive, replace the pigmented adhesive layer.

    Abstract: Tamper- and solvent-indicating labels comprise a single layer of a solvent-indicating composition over and in contact with a tamper-indicating label. The composition of the solvent-indicating label is sensitive to solvent (e.g., water, hydrocarbon, etc.). If the label is designed for sensitivity to water, then it typically comprises an organic solvent-soluble binder, pigment at a concentration greater than the critical pigment-binder ratio, and dispersed water-soluble dye particles. The tamper-indicating label can be of any construction, e.g., frangible and difficult to remove, or easy to remove but leaving behind a pattern of adhesion, or cleanly removed but irreversibly changed.

    Abstract: A label for identifying an object includes a radio frequency transponder and a hologram. The radio frequency transponder has an antenna and a transponder circuit sandwiched between two layers of material which form exterior surfaces of the transponder. The hologram comprises a first layer of non-metallic material applied to one of the exterior surfaces and forming a non-metallic reflector of light. A generally transparent second layer contains a holographic image and extends across the first layer. Because the reflective first layer is made of a non-metallic material, its close proximity to the radio frequency transponder does not detune the transponder as may occur when metallic holograms are placed in close proximity to the transponder. Thus the hologram provides a deterrent to unauthorized use of the label without affecting the operation of the radio frequency transponder.

    Abstract: Coating compositions for making ink jet recording media are disclosed which comprise a mixture of a binder composition comprising a non-cationic water-insoluble binder resin having a surface energy greater than 40 dyn/cm dissolved or dispersed in an alcoholic liquid medium or dispersed in an aqueous liquid medium, the liquid medium having a boiling point less than 150.degree. C. and a viscosity up to 100 kpa:s at 25.degree. C., and hydrophilic pigment particles having a number average particle size in the range from 1-25 microns and an oil absorption of at least 60 g oil/100 g particles, the composition having a pigment particle to binder resin weight ratio in the range from 0.5:1 to 3:1. A recording medium for ink jet printing is also described which may be made using this coating composition, along with a process for making it. A process for making a water-resistant color image on a support material using the described recording medium, along with the product obtainable by that process, is also disclosed.

    Abstract: Rigid signs are prepared by a facile method of fixing an image to a rigid substrate coated with a thermally tackifiable coating. The image is readily produced through the use of a computer graphics program, and the image is printed onto a transfer film using a conventional computer printer. The image-bearing surface of the transfer film is then joined in pressing contact with the thermoplastic coating which has been warmed to a softened or tacky state. Upon cooling the thermoplastic coating to a hard, durable state, the transfer film is removed leaving the image securedly affixed to the rigid substrate.
