Abstract: A security device that increases the number of design options available for a machine testable security feature formed in part from a light absorbing (e.g., magnetic) material, while more effectively hiding or concealing this material, is provided. The inventive security device achieves these results by physically separating this security feature from a visually detectable or public security feature. Also provided by way of this invention is a process for preparing the inventive security device as well as a security document that employs one or more such devices.

Abstract: A method and system for format checking a translated text in which the method includes displaying the translated text on a graphical user interface, determining whether the translated text is visually acceptable based on the displaying, and validating the translated text. The system includes a graphical user interface, a storage medium having at least one translated text stored therein, and a processor adapted to read the translated text from the storage medium and display the translated text on the graphical user interface as a virtual display.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for achieving extremely bright, reflective and opaque graphics on clear labels for use on dark bottles, containers, and other light absorbent backgrounds with improvements to cost, production rates and graphic design capabilities. The method includes steps of vacuum metalizing an aluminum metalized film to specified thickness; printing multiple etching resistant inks on the aluminum surface of the aluminum metalized film; and demetalizing non-inked areas of said film.

Abstract: Durable security devices that are resistant to chemical attack and mechanical degradation and security articles employing such devices, are provided. By way of the durable security device of the present invention, opposing longitudinal borders adjacent an information-bearing layer are sealed, thereby preventing corrosive and/or degrading materials from reaching this layer through these sealed borders. In a preferred embodiment, at least a portion of the information-bearing layer is fully encapsulated, thereby rendering this portion or layer and the information conveyed thereby, impervious to chemical attack.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluating thermal barrier coating material on a surface of a part or component that is subjected to transient heat/thermal cycles. A pulsed laser heating apparatus that preferably uses lenses and optical fiber focusing components simulates conditions of brief heating on the test specimen. In the method of the invention, the temporal shape, spatial distribution, and total energy of the laser pulse are designed to produce a spot of uniform illumination and heat absorption on the test specimen that closely approximates the thermal loading that the specimen is expected to receive during use. The test specimen is then examined for thermally induced changes.

Abstract: A tube bird feeder comprising a seed container having a side wall and an opening at the top thereof to fill the seed container, at least one feed access opening in the side wall, a seed port structure removably connected to the side wall proximate the feed access opening, the seed port structure having a seed baffle, and at least one perch member, said perch member being removably secured to the side wall such that the perch member locks the seed port structure in position. The assembly may be easily dismantled for cleaning and there are also provided a plurality of vents for the interior of the seed container.

Abstract: A squirrel proof bird feeder wherein there is provided a lower movable shroud which extends about a lower portion of the feed container having feed access openings therein, a spring member biasing the shroud to a position wherein feed container access openings and shroud access openings are substantially aligned while permitting the shroud access opening to move out of alignment with the feed container access opening when a predetermined weight is placed on the shroud. An adjustment is provided for adjusting the weight required to move the shroud.

Abstract: A multi-layer label for displaying information is disclosed which includes at least two layers which may be repeatedly partially separated and re-adhered to one another, such that a portion of the outer surface of a lower layer is exposed upon separation of a portion of an upper layer from it. The inner surface of the upper layer of the label is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive. To form a lift tab for the upper layer at least one corner of the inner surface is either coated with varnish to deaden the adhesive, or alternatively, a corner is not coated with adhesive. The outer surface of the lower layer is selectively coated with an adhesive release material such that the coated portion releasably bonds to the inner surface of the upper layer, and, the portion of the outer surface of the lower layer not coated with the adhesive release layer permanently bonds to the upper layer thus forming a hinge between the two layers. A method and apparatus for manufacturing a multi-layer label is also disclosed.
