    Abstract: A system for controlling a mode of operation of a vehicle having a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS), an engine, and a drive motor coupled to the RESS and the engine, the drive motor selectively powered by at least one of the RESS and the engine includes a controller operable to adjust the vehicle to operate in a plurality of operating modes including a first mode in which the drive motor is powered by the RESS, a second mode in which the drive motor is powered more by the engine than the RESS. When the second mode of operation is selected, controller is configured to operate the engine as necessary to maintain the RESS at or above a predetermined state of charge.

    Abstract: A connection monitoring system and method for a vehicle high voltage energy storage system is disclosed. The method performs a check, at initial connection of the high voltage energy storage system, to insure that the vehicle high voltage wiring system is fully connected and without short circuits prior to allowing full current to the vehicle and normal vehicle operation. The method switches in a resistor to limit current flow between the high voltage energy storage system and the vehicle high voltage wiring, and measures the voltage and a voltage rise time across the resistor. The voltage and the voltage rise time across the resistor are used to determine if a short circuit is present, and if so the high voltage energy storage system is disconnected to protect the vehicle and its users.

The battery pack for the battery-powered vehicle comprises battery modules coupled in series. The battery modules are configured to provide power to the battery-powered vehicle and each of the battery modules has a state-of-charge. The battery pack also comprises battery control modules (BCMs) that are coupled to the battery modules. Each of the battery modules is coupled to one of the BCMs and each of BCMs is configured to monitor a battery module parameter. Furthermore, the battery pack comprises a battery control interface module (BCIM) coupled to each of the BCMs. The BCIM is configured to receive the battery module parameter from each of the BCMs and independently adjust the state-of-charge of each of the battery modules based on the battery module parameter.
